Masterpieces of British Modernism (Greenwood Introduces Literary Masterpieces), by Marlowe A. Miller

Flourishing during the first 2 decades of the 20th century, British Modernism gave birth to some of the world's most influential literary works. Written expressly for high school students and general readers, this book succinctly yet thoughtfully discusses 7 masterpieces of British Modernism. Included are chapters on Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, E.M. Forster's Howards End, James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, D.H. Lawrence's Women in Love, T.S. Eliot's The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and The Wasteland, and Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway. Each chapter provides biographical information; a plot summary; an analysis of themes, style, symbols, and characters; and a discussion of the work's historical and cultural contexts. An introductory essay surveys and defines Modernism, and a bibliography cites works for further reading.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up—This title provides a critical overview of works by six authors. Following a concise introduction, one seminal novel each by Joseph Conrad (Heart of Darkness), E. M. Forster (Howards End), James Joyce (A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man), D. H. Lawrence (Women in Love), and Virginia Woolf (Mrs. Dalloway) as well as two poems by T. S. Eliot ("The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" and "The Waste Land") are discussed. Each chapter includes biographical context, plot summary, character development, symbols and motifs, narrative style, and historical context. This nearly uniform approach facilitates easy use for beginning researchers. Themes articulated in the introduction are successfully woven throughout to provide a clear picture of the ties between the authors, their works, and this period of social upheaval at the turn of the 20th century. This title is not exhaustive or unique; much of the information can be found in other reference sources. Still, it provides accessible criticism for any library in need of titles on this period, or on the works discussed within.—Jill Heritage Maza, Greenwich High School, CT

SECOND EDITION: REVISED, UPDATED AND EXPANDED

Because the JonBenet Ramsey case is so very complex, so very mysterious, with such a superabundance of both evidence and suspects, and so many assumptions, opinions, and contradictory and/or questionable testimony, it is especially important to exercise the greatest diligence in tracking down the facts and not allowing oneself get too distracted by all the rest. If we attempt to account for all the many bits and pieces of “evidence,” all the various opinions, both “expert” and inexpert, the many various suspects, no matter how “likely” each one seems to be, and the dubious testimony of the Ramseys themselves, who might well have had good reason to lie or dissemble, we will find ourselves in a hopeless morass. If, on the other hand, we stick with the facts, and logical inferences based on these facts, leavened with a healthy dose of simple common sense, then, as it seems to me, a clear picture emerges.

The 2nd edition of this book has been revised to eliminate redundancies and long technical discussions. The new edition also contains updated material, an additional chapter, and three new appendices.

Rule it IN to your reading collection if you're perplexed by the Ramsey case
By Verbal Blowtorch
I was reminded of the JonBenet Ramsey case over the 2013 holidays, when I had a couple of weeks off from work and saw the subject within Yahoo’s ‘trending now’ section. I began searching for more on the topic, and the more I read, the more distraught I became. It seemed like it couldn’t just be ‘unsolvable.’ I was unsettled and wondered if I’d use up my whole stay-home vacation pondering the case and still be none-the-wiser in terms of deciding for myself who was the most logical culprit in this heinous crime.

While we likely will never know for certain, what I wanted was for someone with common sense, and the ability to cut through clutter and crazy hypotheses, to tell me who was most likely responsible for what happened to this beautiful little girl. DocG is that person. After days of doing various searches pertaining to the Ramsey case and reading all sorts of opinions, I felt lucky to have happened across his blog. I felt even luckier to find he’d composed a book on the subject, which is easier to navigate than the blog.

For six bucks, he logically and methodically sifts out key evidence from a sea full of red herrings. Ruled IN: Solving the JonBenet Ramsey Case by DocG gave me a sense of closure in knowing who is most likely to be the real killer, and while that won’t bring JonBenet back, nor is it likely to achieve justice for her, at least my mind is now at ease as I definitively see the answer.

An interesting addition to the literature on the JonBenet case
By Amazon Customer
This book is very well-written and the author presents his case clearly and persuasively. He rightly points out that one of the main players in the case was eliminated as a suspect rather prematurely and sets out the reasons for which this person should remain under the 'umbrella of suspicion.'

Having said this, I can't say that I agree with all of his conclusions about the case and I found that some of his reasoning was slightly specious. For example, he talks about its being unlikely that a woman wrote the ransom note since it made use of technical, 'masculine' language. I leave aside the fact that the letter has been described by more than one commentator as being maternal and almost solicitous in tone but I would point out that the woman he eliminates on this basis was not only a very competent journalism graduate but had won at least one award for translating technical information into layman's English for computer user manuals.

On balance, however, this book will certainly give readers much to contemplate and it adds to the debate so I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in the case.

The BEST analysis of this case ---- fascinating read and very convincing!
By Brooke B.
I have followed this fascinating case since it hit the news back in 1996. I have been all over the board suspecting just about everyone possible. It's just that kind of case. Any theory I read convinced me who the murderer was until, of course, I read another theory. However, I never suspected the person who I now feel is the real murderer nor did I give much thought to why I overlooked this person for so many years.

Then I came across Doc G's blog. Doc is the ONLY person who explains why the real murderer was overlooked and how and why this person has been able to escape suspicion, for all these years, by the police, the District Attorney's Office, investigators, and the public. Doc's theory is the ONLY theory that makes total sense, and he explains it in detail. He leaves no stone unturned. He is a genius when it comes to examining the evidence and the FACTS of this case. And, once you read his theory and examination of the facts, it becomes a very simple matter pointing the finger at the real murderer. It's actually not that complicated.

Doc G is an excellent writer and this book will satisfy anyone who has ever had even a slight interest in this unsolved case. Like another reviewer stated, I now feel satisfied knowing in my heart who committed this horrible crime. I no longer feel the need to read other theories or look at all the evidence over and over again. Once Doc G explains it all, there is no need to look anywhere else.

My only complaint I have about this book is the section regarding the handwriting comparisons, and my complaint stems from the fact that this book is in Kindle version. Because of that, the diagrams and pictures were hard to see. Doc does the most comprehensive, thorough examination of handwriting from suspects in this case, but I felt the need to have more pictures along side his comments so that I could visually see what he was saying. However, it didn't bother me too much because I have read his blog thoroughly, and have already seen all of the handwriting examples he refers to. I don't need the handwriting evidence to convince me at this point. But for someone new to Doc's writings, this chapter might be a little long without the visual enhancements.

This is a MUST read for anyone interested in this case! And the price is the same as two cups of coffee.

Noah's Ark: Essays on Architecture (Writing Architecture), by Hubert Damisch

Trained as an art historian but viewing architecture from the perspective of a "displaced philosopher," Hubert Damisch in these essays offers a meticulous parsing of language and structure to "think architecture in a different key," as Anthony Vidler puts it in his introduction. Drawn to architecture because it provides "an open series of structural models," Damisch examines the origin of architecture and then its structural development from the nineteenth through the twenty-first centuries. He leads the reader from Jean-Franois Blondel to Eugne Viollet-le-Duc to Mies van der Rohe to Diller + Scofidio, with stops along the way at the Temple of Jerusalem, Vitruvius's De Architectura, and the Louvre. In the title essay, Damisch moves easily from Diderot's Encylopdie to Noah's Ark (discussing the provisioning, access, floor plan) to the Pan American Building to Le Corbusier to Ground Zero. Noah's Ark marks the origin of construction, and thus of architecture itself. Diderot's Encylopdie entry on architecture followed his entry on Noah's Ark; architecture could only find its way after the Flood.

In these thirteen essays, written over a span of forty years, Damisch takes on other histories and theories of architecture to trace a unique trajectory of architectural structure and thought. The essays are, as Vidler says, "a set of exercises" in thinking about architecture.

Review

Hubert Damisch is one of the very few philosophers who have taken the field of architecture seriously. This book will be the first time English-speaking readers will have the privilege of reading his provocative takes on a range of issues from geometry and perspective, to Le Corbusier and Diller and Scofidio.

(Mark Jarzombek, Professor of the History and Theory of Architecture, MIT)

This translation of Hubert Damisch's incisive and profound essays on architecture is long overdue. Among Paris intellectuals, Damisch is unquestionably alone in having considered designs and building as theoretical objects. From archetypes such as the column or the wall, to the works of Le Corbusier, Adolf Loos, and his close friend Jean Prouv, considered in compelling detail, he highlights with utmost elegance fundamental issues in architecture.

(Jean-Louis Cohen, Sheldon H. Solow Professor in the History of Architecture, Institute of Fine Arts, New York University; author of Architecture in Uniform, The Future of Architecture Since 1889, and Le Corbusier: An Atlas of Modern Landscapes)

Drawing from an enormous range of historical subject matter, from the Renaissance to the present, Damisch probes not what architecture was but what architecture is -- what kind of knowledge, what kind of thing, the philosophical nature of its existence, and how architecture functions as a fundamental postulate for our being in the world. Reading Damisch writing architecture leads us through origins and ends, disciplines and practices, and produces sheer exhilaration of architectural thought.

(K. Michael Hays, Eliot Noyes Professor of Architecture Theory, Harvard Graduate School of Design; author of Architecture's Desire)

Here, he explores through fascinating stories and trademark stunning photography the most interesting, essential, useful, and beautiful of the millions of chemical structures that make up every material in the world.

Gray begins with an explanation of how atoms bond to form molecules and compounds, as well as the difference between organic and inorganic chemistry. He then goes on to explore the vast array of materials molecules can create, including: soaps and solvents; goops and oils; rocks and ores; ropes and fibers; painkillers and dangerous drugs; sweeteners; perfumes and stink bombs; colors and pigments; and controversial compounds including asbestos, CFCs, and thimerosal.

Big, gorgeous photographs, as well as diagrams of the compounds and their chemical bonds, rendered with never before seen beauty, fill the pages and capture molecules in their various states.

As he did in The Elements, Gray shows us molecules as we've never seen them before. It's the perfect book for his loyal fans who've been eager for more and for anyone fascinated with the mysteries of the material world.

Review
I am so bowled over by Molecules that I can only express my feelings with a one-word blurb: "WONDERFUL!" — Oliver Sacks

"Molecules is like dipping your toe in a clear shallow pool—with transparent explanations, shimmering graphics, and luminous photography—then suddenly realizing you are happily swimming in deep waters, relaxed and having fun! The science here is presented so elegantly you'll feel like you are holding a jewelry catalog, and it's impossible to put down. A must have for anyone of any age or education." — Jamie Hyneman, Host, MythBusters

Even BETTER than The Elements if that's possible...
By Gavin Scott
+So in my review of The Elements, I stupidly suggested that the book was a great example of why e-books weren't going to replace physical books any time soon. Well we know how that turned out (the fully interactive Elements app on iOS is breathtaking and undoubtedly many times more popular than the book). I'm sure Touch Press is about to release Molecules as an iOS e-book app too [Update: they did], but I'm still really glad I got the physical book.

"The Elements" and "Molecules" look very similar, but there are some subtle differences due to the difference in their subjects. The Elements was primarily a beautiful picture book and catalog of all the elements. But that made it somewhat more abstract since most of us rarely interact directly with more than a handful of elements, and their atomic nature is less a part of every day experience. The text was mostly interesting trivia for each element.

Molecules on the other hand moves up a layer from atoms to molecular compounds, and as such it comes a step closer to our daily experience. The Elements was a book you mostly looked at, but Molecules is a book you'll want to READ since it's jam packed full of interesting and useful information about the chemistry of nature and human industry.

It's still just as lavishly illustrated and beautifully produced as The Elements, but there's much more depth here because the author is not compelled to cover "all" of anything as was the case in the earlier book (where honestly there are a lot of pretty boring or obscure elements).

Amazon's "Look Inside" feature lets you see what most of the book looks like if you want to see examples of the topics covered, but it does a good job of covering (in an interesting and visual way) both the chemistry of how atoms become molecules and then the properties of various molecular species, as well as numerous higher level applications and what sort of molecules we experience through our senses (color, scent, taste, etc.) as well as those with biological applications (painkillers for example).

A great gift for a child or anyone about to begin their study of the sciences, especially chemistry.

It's a book with a very high signal to noise ratio, one that will leave you feeling smarter after you read it.

A great write-up on everything
By Ed Pegg Jr
Theo Gray makes elements and now molecules personal. Neotame is one molecule he photographed for the book, carefully placing just a few grams into a glass dish. Neotame is a safe sweetener that's 10,000 times as sweet as sugar. Despite being exceedingly careful, he still tasted a pleasant sweetness on the back of his tongue, just from the molecules in the air from opening the container. For hours afterward, his mustache tasted sweet. This suggests a great training exercise for college chemistry students -- measure out one gram of neotame, then put it back in the container.

This is primarily a picture book, so he's got pictures of everything. Many types of animal pee can be bought, and he shows how they are packaged. A drawback to elements is that most are gray -- with molecules, most are white, but he varies that up by showing the end products, such as many types of rope. Turns out cats and parrots each favor one particular type of rope. I didn't realize how toxic wallpaper could be -- see his section on Paris green (copper acetoarsenite).

It's a big book, gorgeously photographed. What sets it apart from a DK picture book is that he's got great stories interspersed with the interesting facts on every page. In the opening, he talks of historic reactions involving the oil of vitriol -- "but I still haven't told you what this stuff is yet". I didn't remember, but I continued to let him tell the story and show the pictures.

Highly recommended.

If you want chemistry to make sense, you need this book and the sister book, Elements.
By T. Emond
This book is AWESOME! What an amazing way to make chemistry make sense. We have Elements (by the same author). It is you chemical "alphabet", molecules would be your chemical "words". (That is how I explain it to my students.)

These two books together show students all of the elemental building blocks. Then, Molecules comes right behind showing how you can assemble the elements into different molecules and what they become. They show the diagram of the molecule and wonderful color photos of the actual molecule in a recognizable item.

I recommend both of these books together. The work that went into these titles is fantastic. It shows on every page. I love them.
