About the Author
Dr. Jones is co-author of Engineering Materials 1 and 2 and lead author for the 3rd and 4th editions. He was the founder editor of Elsevier's journal Engineering Failure Analysis, and founder chair of Elsevier's International Conference on Engineering Failure Analysis series. His research interests are in materials engineering, and along with serving as President of Christ's College at the University of Cambridge he now works internationally advising major companies and legal firms on failures of large steel structures.

Pretty poorly done

As a Material Science and Engineering Student, I have owned and read many engineering books. Ashby's is one of the worst, if not the worst, I've encountered so far. Overall, the book seems to simply present a few ideal and specific scenarios, giving shallow explanations. There is no sense of a comprehensive or general coverage. This would be tolerable if the topics presented were covered in depth, but they aren't. Random ideas are presented with unjustified equations, and the reader is only able to learn about the specific scenario presented. The equations are also often labelled poorly and not explained at all. For example, there is an equation that involves two variables "I". The variables significance is not explained at all, nor is it understood why two of the same variable is used. Only after a large amount of the students in my class (including some of the grad students) spent time starching our heads did we come to the conclusion that "I" represented Moment of Inertia in part of the equation, and Length in another part. Such a mistake is.... almost insulting... It makes me wonder, did the author even read the book before he printed it? Is this a joke? To use the same letter for two separate things in the same equation, and then not even explain them, is a mistake that a grade school student wouldn't make.

Good Overview, Lacks Detail

This is an interesting book. It basically is a set of 30 lectures which cover at a fairly high level what one would have called strength of materials along with some discussion of the materials themselves. It introduces stress and strain and then blends it with a discussion of the materials.

It discusses composite materials from the perspective of design as well as from that of composition.It has the failing of assuming the reader is familiar with many items which one may not be. For example, on p 91 the author discusses a reed on a musical instrument. For many engineers devoid of any musical exposure they would likely find the reference as vacuous.

Equations are presented often with no clear derivation. For one who knows from whence they came that is fine but I suspect that for the beginner there is the question: where did that come from.

Some of the cases are of interest but having been close to the Space Shuttle disaster back in the 80s the discussion of that failure just missed the point. The problem was Feynman presented a beautiful description which the author does not seem to have included.

Overall the book is culturally wonderful but pedagogically wanting. It lacks the detail of an engineering text for strength of materials and is at too high a level on the actual materials side. On the other hand as a text for an overview after having been exposed to a more classic book, this is wonderful, it fills in the corners and gives one a broad perspective. The challenge is that one wonders what the text is to be used for.

A Wealth of Practical Knowledge...

Sooner or later, anyone who uses a microscope, whether for business or pleasure, will discover Rheinberg illumination which is produced by using Rheinberg Filters. Invented in 1896 by Julius Rheinberg, Rheinberg illumination reveals details and yields striking images which simply can not be produced by any other means. The only problem is that commercially produced filters, if one can find them for their particular make and model of microscope, are prohibitively expensive.

The internet hosts many articles on Rheinberg Illumination and filters, and it hosts a few which contain cursory instruction on how to make them, but as is so often the case, cursory instruction leads to nothing but frustration and poor results. Fortunately, there is one definitive resource for those wishing to learn the art of constructing Rheinberg filters: Mike Shaw's book How To Make Rheinberg Filters. Mr. Shaw's book thoroughly describes and illustrates every aspect of making Rheinberg and some other filters used in microscopy. Filter construction aside, the book contains valuable information as to where tools and supplies may be procured, how common household tools can be re-purposed for filter making, and even how to market and sell filters as a business. Although he describes many sources for supplies, Mr. Shaw also maintains an Amazon.com store for those readers wishing to purchase some of the tools and materials mentioned in the book.

How To Make Rheinberg Filters is written in a personable, easy-to-read style. The author avoids becoming bogged down in optical theory, and avoids using overly technical terminology. To his credit, and of great benefit to the reader, Mr. Shaw emphasizes the simple and practical. As a result, his book is suitable for use by both student and adult readers. Professionals and hobbyists alike will find great value in the book's contents.

Besides Rheinberg filters, there is a thorough discussion of Darkfield Illumination, filters and their construction. Some expensive professional microscopes contain built-in Darkfield Illumination, but most do not. Simple to construct using Mr. Shaw's techniques, one can quickly make a Darkfield filter which would cost ten times the book's price if purchased from a microscope manufacturer. For those unfamiliar, Darkfield Illumination produces images which reveal details not visible using a microscope's standard (Brightfield) Illumination. A related experimental filtering technique described as DIY Filtering is covered here as well. This section alone is well worth many times the price of the book.

There is some bonus material included in How To Make Rheinberg Filters. Although not relating to Rheinberg, the author has included a chapter on how to make an inexpensive microscope camera mount, and how to build a simple but effective plant press for preserving plant specimens collected from the field.

In conclusion, I recommend this book to anyone interested in understanding, making, and or using Rheinberg filters or the other microscope filters discussed in How To Make Rheinberg Filters.

Pros: The content of this book (I bought the paperback edition) is great. The concepts and techniques are well thought out. Most importantly, everything is explained in every day, easy to understand language.

Cons: There are 144 photos in this book. Unfortunately every single photo in the book is presented in black-and-white. Shouldn't a book about creating beautiful "multi-colored" filters be printed in color? It does seem like good color photos would be very helpful to hobbyists new to microscopy.

Michael Shaw's Rheinberg filter book

This book is just under 200 pages and evolved from a paperback Michael Shaw had written. As would be expected, much of the material from the paperback version had been carried over to the electronic version. However, the book has been revised and additional material added. For example, there is now a chapter on how to attach a digital camera to a microscope. As noted by the previous reviewers this is a how to book: it is a practical guide for making Rheinberg filters as well as providing some guidelines on making oblique illumination stops and using polarizing filters. So it would be incomplete to say that this book JUST covers making Rheinberg filter. It is more general and should provide a working guideline on how to increase contrast when viewing transparent specimens in a light microscope. The materials and methods are inexpensive and simple and will be of value to the hobbyist who enjoys viewing the micro world.

The book is not a theoretical analysis on microscope illumination strategies. Rather is is a guide book that encourages the microscopist to play with his microscope, enabling him to generate colorful images from specimens that are normally colorless. The book has color illustrations.

A quick note on reading the book. You do not need a Kindle. All you need is a smart phone or a computer or a tablet that can run the Kindle Reading Apps (the two I downloaded for my iPhone and Mac computer were free). So don't be put off from buying this book if you don't own a Kindle.

I recommend this book. It is an easy and fast read and provides numerous helpful suggestions and insights on working with a microscope.

About the Author
Walter Savitch received his Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1969. Since that time he has been on the faculty at the University of California at San Diego and is currently a Professor of Computer Science and director of the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Cognitive Science. Professor Savitch’s research areas include complexity theory, formal language theory, computational linguistics, and the development of computer science education materials. In addition to writing numerous research articles and involvement in other editorial projects, he has written a number of well-known computer science textbooks, including Pascal, Ada, and C++ CS1 and CS2 textbooks.

1st edition review

I have just completed (i need only two more chapters) the first of edition of this book. While not as exhaustive as the the edition for sale here I can tell you the author is good at what he does. I haven't decided if I am going to purchase this edition but let me say that the author's prose style reminds me of the best computer programming books I read while I was an undergraduate at the University of Florida in the early 90's. This book is suitable for teaching a first or second year class of computer science students at a university. Unlike those silly "Teach yourself Java programming in 24 hours" this is the kind of programming book that really teaches you something.

Pay Me To Proof It

Positive: the overall organization, presentation, and explanation of the Java language is done quite well. Examples are to the point and not overly complicated.

Negative: with the book being close to $100 and in its 6th edition, you would think that the editing department would have done a better job on this. I understand errors occur, especially in technical textbooks. But c'mon, I found myself constantly telling my students "this error on page ###" and "that error on page ###". While programming is partly about finding errors, I shouldn't be doing that within the textbook content that is supposed to be correct especially when attempting to teach first-semester computer students.

Absolutely The Best Introduction To Java

This book was written by someone who truly knows how to teach and not merely transmit knowledge from brain to paper. His treatment of object oriented programming concepts in chapters 4 and 5 is FLAWLESS. No other author does such a thorough job (this includes Deitel, Horton, Schildt, Cadenhead, etc) and I speak as the owner of these (and other texts). Let this book be your first stop towards obtaining the Sun Java Programmer and Developer Certifications as well as IBM's Websphere Certifications. But don't forget to purchase the Java Language Specification as well.

About the Author
Peter Tsukahira is an Asian American who has lived for the last twenty five years on Mt. Carmel in northern Israel. For many years, he pursued a dual-track career in business and ministry as a pastor and teacher as well as working in the computer industry. Peter is now an Israeli citizen and life-long student of culture. In Culture of the Kingdom he tells the story of his own journey from the United States to Japan and Israel while pressing on spiritually to discover his destiny in the culture of God’s kingdom. This story is about looking back on his roots in the counterculture of the 1960s and forward to the coming of the kingdom of God. He is Director of the Or HaCarmel Ministry Center on Mt. Carmel in northern Israel and founder of the Mt. Carmel School of Ministry (www.mountcarmelsom.com). In a world of relative truths and utter confusion. Peter Tsukahira write's with amazing clarity and conviction.
He does not speak as an academic exploring philosophy from a distance, but as a man who has gone through the fire's of life.

The message of The Kingdom explored in this book is the most important message for, not only today's Church, but the entire world.

His message is clear that God never intended for Kingdom Culture to be relegated to religious activities, but transform nations. Culture of The Kingdom must be read by people from all walks of life, regardless of vocation. From cleaners to doctors this book will open your eyes to see how God's culture impacts every area of society.

About the Author

Brian Goetz has helped students of all levels achieve success in mathematics for sixteen years. As a curriculum specialist for the Grand Rapids Area Precollege Engineering Program, he created numerous materials to motivate and inspire underserved populations. Brian also ran a math learning center at Bay de Noc Community College, where he helped students exceed their expectations of success. Brian has been teaching at Kellogg Community College for eight years. A common thread throughout all his teaching experiences is that an active and supportive environment is needed for students to succeed. With this belief close to his heart, Brian finds working with the other authors to be one of the most rewarding experiences of his career. When he isn’t working, Brian spends quality time with his family and friends, mountain bikes, and kayaks. He dreams of spending a summer kayaking around Lake Superior.

Graham Smith has spent his life immersed in education. He was raised in a family of six teachers, where dinner conversations often centered on public education. Since then, Graham has gained sixteen years of classroom experience, and spent the last 9 years teaching full-time at Kellogg Community College (KCC). The majority of Graham’s professional life has been focused on the education and success of the under-prepared student, which he continues through this work as the Developmental Mathematics Coordinator at KCC. Graham’s substantial training and experience in mathematics and education, as well as his training and certification in developmental education through the Kellogg Institute at Appalachian State University and the National Center for Developmental Education, provide a comprehensive understanding of developmental mathematics. This background and experience provide the author team with a well-developed perspective. In his spare time, Graham enjoys spending time with his wife Amy, catching big fish, playing the guitar, and tinkering with his car that runs on recycled vegetable oil.

Dr. John Tobey currently teaches mathematics at North Shore Community College in Danvers, MA where he has taught for thirty-nine years. Previously Dr. Tobey taught calculus at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He has a doctorate from Boston University and a Master's degree from Harvard. He served as the mathematics department chair for his college for five years. He has authored and co-authored eight college mathematics textbooks with Pearson. He is a past president of New England Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (NEMATYC) and is an active member of the American Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC). In 1993 Dr. Tobey received the NISOD award for excellence in teaching.

Chapters cover hearing science, diagnostic procedures, an introduction to hearing aids, and extensive coverage of anatomy and physiology of the auditory and vestibular systems. The author has taught an Introduction to Audiology course for more than 20 years, and has truly designed this text with the student in mind.

The second edition has been updated and reorganized, and also includes two brand new chapters, one on clinical-pure tone masking and another on hearing screening. Additional details and figures have been added on vestibular anatomy and physiology, acoustic resonance, speech acoustics, middle ear wide-band power (MEWP) measures of the middle ear, and masking for speech testing. About the Author
Steven Kramer, Ph.D., is a Professor in the School of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at San Diego State University, where he has been a faculty member since 1985. He is also the Co-Director of the Audiology Doctoral (Au.D.) Program offered jointly by San Diego State University (SDSU) and the University California San Diego (UCSD). Dr. Kramer served as the department chair from 1990-2001. He obtained his master s and doctoral degrees in audiology and hearing science from the University of Florida. He is a licensed and certified audiologist, and continues to be active in clinic. Before his appointment at SDSU, he was a clinical faculty at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. His teaching assignments have included a wide array of courses, including diagnostics, medical audiology, evoked potentials, and anatomy/physiology. His research experience concentrates on diagnostics, including the use of auditory evoked potentials and otoacoustic emissions to describe normal auditory function, as well as the application of these measures for improving the evaluation of certain clinical impairments, especially infants at-risk for hearing loss.

About the Author:

Marc Nussbaum has been developing high tech computer products for over 40 years. He is the President of Audible Rush and has served as CEO of Lantronix and SVP Engineering, Chief Technical Officer, and co-founder of Western Digital’s hard drive business. He is an engineer, photographer and amateur astronomer. Best primer with pictures and expert comments on the 2017 solar eclipse

For astronomers and stargazers, or just curious travelers wondering why the moon will fully obscure the sun, "Total Solar Eclipse 2017," is the primer to prepare for this once in lifetime experience to view the August 2017 eclipse. It inspired me to start planning to travel and beat the crowds in August, 2017.

This is the definitively and expertly written book. It is an experience that's easy to read by the author who knows this subject better than anyone. Great NASA pictures and never before seen prior eclipse photographs taken by Mr. Nussbaum, himself.

What an awesome book! Well written, informative, humorous and a must read for anyone interested in the next RARE 2017 Total Solar Eclipse! Has everything you need to know as to where best to view, how to and what to do to safely enjoy this rare phenomenon. Spend the money and get the color version as it contains great color photos...get it early and be prepared!

I have never experienced a total solar eclipse, and frankly the experience was not very high on my bucket list until I read this book. Now, I can only say: thank you Marc Nussbaum for alerting me in time to this magical and wondrous event, and for providing me with everything I need to know to be able to enjoy it to the fullest. This book is packed with information about how total solar eclipses occur, why they are so awe-inspiring compared to the mundane partial solar eclipse and lunar eclipses, and all the details regarding equipment for safety and comfort and photography. The writing is clear and accessible even when dealing with complex scientific concepts. But most importantly, the author’s genuine excitement about how transcendent an experience a total solar eclipse can be is truly infectious – I really cannot wait to be there and be a witness to this unique celestial happening. I will also be sending copies of this book to friends and family members so none of them misses out!

Addresses issues by category, e.g. what to work up with complaint of nausea, pain, chest pain. It is a good skeleton for guiding you through what to think about. Not comprehensive, you will still need to look up drug doses, or specific medications.

This book is compr he solve on common surgical problems including their investigations, differential diagnosis and management etc. can possible fit your lab coat pocket if it's not junky. Really great to carry around on ward rounds not just on call. All of the on call books are great.
