American Conspiracies, by Jesse Ventura

A New York Times Best Seller!

New York Times bestselling author Jesse Ventura is back with more conspiracies that our government wishes you didn’t know about!

In this explosive account of wrongful acts and ensuing cover-ups, Jesse Ventura offers a different side to the stories we’ve all heard and read about in the history books. He takes a look at the wide gap between what the government knows and what is revealed to the American people. The media is complicit in these acts of deception, often refusing to consider alternate possibilities and dismissing voices that diverge from public opinion. He will look closely at the theories that have been presented over the years and examine the truth as well as the lies. Ventura does not shy away from the tough questions. As he states, “When I get denied something, I do the opposite of getting intimidated—I get angry.”

Now with new conspiracies added including information on the CIA torture scandal and the financial meltdown of 2008, you will see how the United States government continues to abuse our civil liberties and why we need to continue to stand up for what we know is right.

You may not believe everything in American Conspiracies, but it is guaranteed to make you think harder about everything you do believe.

Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. A necessary, newly revised review of America's secret history
By Anthony J. Thorne
This newly revised edition of Jesse Ventura's AMERICAN CONSPIRACIES adds a handful of chapters to his already detailed overview of America's complicated, covert history. As I mentioned in my review of the first edition, the book originally arrived at a time when conspiracies, specifically American conspiracies, were in the news more than they had been in years. Oliver Stone appeared on the Bill Maher show with a copy of JFK AND THE UNSPEAKABLE by James W. Douglass, and the book became a national bestseller. Elsewhere, ABC news reporter Chris Bury, at a conference in Philadelphia, would label noted FBI whistleblower Colleen Rowley a conspiracy theorist on camera after she critiqued the Bush administration's curious activities prior to 9/11. Then, as now, the phrase `conspiracy theorist' continues to be wielded as an all-purpose put-down by some, and is unwillingly adopted by others who have begun questioning the `official story' surrounding any number of events.

As Rowley noted to her aggressive interviewer, a conspiracy is quite often simply "people deciding to do something bad". People who make such a decision aren't likely to announce it in a press release, hence the logical requirement of secrecy. Likewise, some misdeeds would require more than one person to be successfully carried out, hence the accompanying notion of collusion in private. Yet the idea of two, three or more people in key positions of power privately deciding to do something nefarious is viewed by the mainstream media as an invention of the mentally insane. Criminals might do it, the Mafia might do it, doctors or dentists or lawyers might occasionally do it (as folks from all walks of life are prosecuted for criminal acts every year), but the idea of certain politicians or elements within a government colluding to commit a criminal act is somehow viewed as beyond the pale.

With the vast amounts of power and profit available to those in government, you don't have to buy the premise of every conspiracy theory going to realize that - no matter how big or small - private collusion for personal gain, and a subsequent cover-up by those involved, is going to occur at some point or another. Likewise, there would be few incentives for later politicians to shed light on the events, and many more incentives, both professionally and privately, to keep their big mouths shut. It may all simply depend on the personalities involved. To suggest a hypothetical, can anyone think of any recent, powerful leaders of mainstream American political parties who largely avoided intensive scrutiny by the press, encouraged governmental secrecy, and displayed a notable interest in enhancing their private wealth while in office? Even better - and to extend the argument into areas covered at one point in Ventura's book - can you think of two such upstanding folk, perhaps with a shared background going back some years? This is not to point the finger (if you browse the later book and DVD recommendations in this review, you'll find material that clearly does), but simply to note that the extremes of long-held ideology, paired with the potential for wealth and the accumulation of power, would provide fertile grounds for conspiratorial behavior to be encouraged, rather than reduced.

Ventura's interest in the topic seems both sincere and substantial. Photos of a launch event for the long out-of-print deluxe hardcover of John Armstrong's HARVEY AND LEE (a massive volume discussing curious events in the background history of Lee Harvey Oswald) depict a smiling Ventura holding his own personal copy. A more recent filmed interview with Ventura on the Alex Jones show a few years back concluded with Jones passing Ventura a copy of his documentary TERRORSTORM, and requesting him to watch it. Ventura agreed that he would, and parted with a handshake. Concluding footage of Ventura's car pulling out and driving away revealed, with a zoomed-in shot, the former Governor solemnly reading the back cover of the DVD. (Ultimately, Ventura not only watched the film, but later appeared on camera in an expanded second edition of the movie). Since then, Ventura has appeared in the Alex Jones film TRUTH RISING, debated potential conspiracies with numerous TV and radio personalities, and hosted his own TruTV show on the topic, bluntly titled CONSPIRACY THEORY. The quality of the episodes of the latter that I saw struck me as varying from mixed, to quite good, but not for a moment have I doubted Ventura's own curiosity about the subject.

As author, Ventura could have chosen any number of conspiracy theories to discuss in this volume, but the selected few are compelling and backed up with detailed research. The Wall Street plot against Roosevelt - a very public conspiracy neutered by General Smedley Butler, and now almost forgotten - is covered in detail. The assassinations of Lincoln, John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King are also examined. (As noted in other reviews, the King family ultimately won a court case that suggested the official story explaining MLK's shooting was contrived to cover up government involvement in same). Watergate (a topic thoughtfully covered in earlier books like Jim Hougan's SECRET AGENDA) is dipped into, as are the chances of vote-rigging in the two elections won by George W. Bush, and how the recent Wall Street bailout has benefited a chosen few. 9/11 - the subject of a recent article by Ventura, written on the request of the Huffington Post, then censored by the same site within hours of being posted - is covered in particular detail. Ventura's co-author is Dick Russell, a fine writer of past works on the JFK assassination (such as THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH) who lends a tremendous depth of research to Ventura's gruff, singular writing voice.

Some readers might wish to dig further into the topics explored in AMERICAN CONSPIRACIES. On the assassination of JFK, I highly recommend James W. Douglass's JFK AND THE UNSPEAKABLE, Philip H. Melanson's SPY SAGA (covering the background of Lee Harvey Oswald), Hinckle and Turner's DEADLY SECRETS (documenting the CIA's use of anti-Castro mercenaries for covert activities), Gaeton Fonzi's THE LAST INVESTIGATION (recounting the abortive House Select Committee on Assassinations inquiry from the mid 70's), and Gerald D. McKnight's BREACH OF TRUST, (studying the machinations of the Warren Commission after the event). James DiEugenio has published two fine books that offer a good overview of the case - DESTINY BETRAYED, and RECLAIMING PARKLAND (the latter a part rebuttal to Bugliosi's anti-conspiracy screed RECLAIMING HISTORY). On the death of MLK, Melanson's THE MURKIN CONSPIRACY (`Murkin' being the code chosen by the FBI for their investigation into King's death), and William Pepper's AN ACT OF STATE are both exemplary. On the shooting of RFK, THE ROBERT F. KENNEDY ASSASSINATION: NEW REVELATIONS ON THE CONSPIRACY AND COVER-UP by Philip Melanson (currently only available from Amazon marketplace), THE ASSASSINATION OF ROBERT F. KENNEDY by William Turner, and Shane O'Sullivan's recent, extremely thorough WHO KILLED BOBBY? are the best works available, and each generally supports the conclusions and evidence presented by the others. (It should be noted that James Douglass is at work on books of his own about the murders of King and Robert Kennedy).

On the subject of 9/11, (and in recommended order), I'd suggest the key books by the indefatigable David Ray Griffin, those being THE 9/11 COMMISSION REPORT: OMISSIONS AND DISTORTIONS, THE NEW PEARL HARBOR REVISITED and THE MYSTERIOUS DEATH OF WORLD TRADE CENTRE 7. These can be supplemented with the most thoughtful and comprehensive overviews of the entire event, Jim Marrs's THE TERROR CONSPIRACY, Webster Tarpley's superlative 9/11 SYNTHETIC TERROR, and the overlooked but extremely incisive 9/11: THE NEW EVIDENCE, by British journalist Ian Henshall. Peter Dale Scott's THE ROAD TO 9/11 is a lengthy, heavily annotated University of California Press volume that suggestively fingers two ex-Bush administration members as being busier that morning, with clearly deleterious results, than you may have realized. The major documentaries on the topic are the aforementioned TERRORSTORM: SECOND EDITION, the recent LOOSE CHANGE FINAL CUT and LOOSE CHANGE 9/11: AN AMERICAN COUP, and the disquieting CORE OF CORRUPTION: IN THE SHADOWS. Readers (or viewers) pondering the subject of 9/11 anew might like to contemplate the subject of the various military drills that took place on 9/11 - notably, `Vigilant Guardian' and the other suggestively titled drills re-enacting mock hijacking scenarios on the day of the attacks - and how beneficial they were to the success of the actual hijackings on the day. (General Richard Myers, in a Commission interview, enthused at one point that the drills had actually helped, not hindered, their response on 9/11, presumably suggesting that if the drills had not been present, the US military response - which failed to intercept any of the planes, or prevent any of them from reaching their targets - would have been even worse. The clear embarrassment of General Myers and NORAD commander Ralph Eberhart towards those `coincidental' hijacking drills that mirrored the hijackings they failed to prevent, magically predicted the who and the how and where and when, and fortuitously helped to confuse the immediate response of others, is outlined in detail in Chapter 21 of Michael C. Ruppert's CROSSING THE RUBICON). 9/11 researchers should also dig up an overlooked work from nearly 30 years ago – the 1987 book THE IRAN-CONTRA CONNECTION: SECRET TEAMS AND COVERT OPERATIVES IN THE REAGAN ERA, by Jonathan Marshall, Peter Dale Scott and Jane Hunter, which charts numerous connections and features participants that would reappear both in the foreground and background of the 9/11 story years later. Strikingly, IRAN CONTRA CONNECTION also features a chapter on covert activities from the era that were done in conjunction with Israeli collaborators, and notes a private government think tank – the ‘U.S.-Israel Political Military Committee’ – was set up by Alexander Haig and Robert McFarlane to ‘look at the big picture’ the same year that Israeli government strategists began championing the Oded Yinon plan to target and break up Israel’s rivals in the Middle East. The Yinon plan would influence Cheney and Wolfowitz’s 1992 Defense Planning Guidance paper, and the later PNAC document ‘Rebuilding America’s Defenses’

For a perceptive and sympathetic overview of the entire topic of conspiracy, I'd recommend THE ROUGH GUIDE TO CONSPIRACY THEORIES, a lengthy volume now available in an expanded second edition. David Talbot has just released THE DEVIL'S CHESSBOARD, a damning biography of former CIA head Allen Dulles. Finally, two volumes that exemplify the interconnected nature of much of the above material are Russ Baker's FAMILY OF SECRETS, a Bush family biography (following the exploits of Dubya's Presidential father George H.W. through CIA-linked involvement in Watergate and - possibly - the killing of JFK), and H.P. Albarelli Jr's A TERRIBLE MISTAKE: THE MURDER OF FRANK OLSON AND THE CIA'S SECRET COLD WAR EXPERIMENTS, a recent, mammoth volume that sheds light on much that was once unclear about the CIA's involvement in MK-Ultra, the covert program that dumped much of its documentation following shred orders from nervous, odious CIA head Richard Helms.

American Conspiracies

Jesse Ventura is a former governor of Minnesota and is the host of a TV show "Conspiracy Theory". Dick Russell has written six previous books. The `Introduction' tells how Vietnam educated him; his father was right (p.x). The biggest conspiracy was the looting by Wall Street that destroyed our economy (p.xix). Jesse warns about plans for a military take-over of the country, the "Continuity of Government" plan (p.xix). There are those who hear the phrase "conspiracy theory" and stop thinking; this is an example of Pavlovian conditioning induced by the corporate media. This book lists many conspiracies in historical order. The last chapters will be the most controversial. This book has references for `Further Reading' and `Notes' on the chapters; it lacks an Index.

Chapter 1 tells about the Lincoln Assassination Conspiracy; it was not just a lone nut. Chapter 2 tells about the corporations that tried to overthrow the Federal government in 1934. "It Can't Happen Here"? The American Legion was founded by big corporations for use in strike breaking (p.13). They also funded the "Liberty League" for propaganda purposes (p.15). The Major General who revealed this plot to Congress was ridiculed by publications like `Time' and the `New York Times'. The "Round Table Groups" (p.17) are a "cabal of global financiers" (p.19). The assassination of JFK was the biggest cover-up in a lifetime (Chapter 3). An appointed commission said Oswald did it, later the House Select Committee said it was part of a conspiracy (p.23). "It was completely an inside job" says Castro (p.29). Jesse offers his views about JFK's assassination (p.32). Who was in control? There are interesting comments about "The Second Oswald". Mistaken identification? Mistakes in the press happen when writers get their information second or third hand. Chapter 4 asks who was behind the assassination of Malcolm X.

Chapter 5 explains why James Earl Ray was a fall-guy for unnamed conspirators. Was Ray used by MK-ULTRA (p.62)? The assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy has unresolved questions (Chapter 6). Could Sirhan have been programmed to do what he did (pp.72-73)? Since some of the Watergate burglars worked for the CIA, there is a belief that this agency was involved against Nixon (Chapter 7)! There is more to Jim Jones and the "mass suicide" at Jonestown in 1978 (Chapter 8). The Reagan-Bush team worked with Iran to damage President Carter's re-election campaign (Chapter 9). The Reagan team governed like it campaigned: lying and cheating (p.109). The CIA has been involved in drug trafficking for decades (Chapter 10). American banks benefit (p.114). The CIA originated the heroin epidemic in the cities, then the cocaine epidemic (p.115). Bush and Clinton were involved (p.118).

Chapter 11 deals with the "stolen elections" of 2000, 2004 (and almost 2008). [If Gore won his home state of Tennessee he would be president. Maybe the votes remembered his backing of NAFTA in 1993 and the resultant loss of manufacturing jobs?] Does that plane crash on page 141 remind you of JFK Jr? [Jesse needs to do more thinking about that "antiquated" Electoral College.] Chapter 12 asks what really happened on 9/11? Did some people in the government know in advance (p.143)? How could the FAA and out air defenses have failed? Who ordered a stand down (p.144)? Was the collapse due to a controlled demolition (p.148)? Why did Building 7 collapse (p.149)? [Shoddy design and implementation said a PBS report.] Did a Boeing 727 or a missile hit the Pentagon (p.151)? Did military jets shoot down Flight 93 (p.153)? Were warnings ignored (p.154)? Page 155 tells of other warnings before 9/11. "The 9/11 Commission was a whitewash" (p.161). Did "almost every person involved in the official version of 9/11 lied".

Wall Street caused the worst depression in one lifetime (Chapter 13). It was not "sub-prime loans" that caused this (p.165). They were financial fodder to create Collateralized Debt Obligations that took junk BBB bonds and turned them into blue-chip AAA bonds to sell to trusting investors. Did Goldman-Sachs swindle vast sums from ordinary people (p.167)? It seems to be. Page 168 concisely defines the cartel called the Federal Reserve. [Does Executive Order 11,110 explain why JFK was bumped off?] The New Deal financial regulations prevented another depression (p.169). It also prevented the looting that destroyed pension funds (pp.172-173). [Was this the biggest fraud since the Yazoo Lands swindle (p.174)?] The Federal Reserve has looted the purchasing power of the dollar (p.175). They need "effective oversight and auditing". Is President Obama in debt to Goldman-Sachs (p.177)? Should the Federal Reserve be abolished (p.182)?

Is there a plan to end democracy in America (Chapter 14)? That quote by Vice President Wallace seems prophetic (p.183). Were prisoners tortured as an exercise in sadism (p.185)? Should the "USA Patriot Act" be amended or abolished (p.187)? Are there plans to take over the country (pp.190-191)? Concentration camps (p.192)? Is the US Army War College preparing a new war on citizens (p.193)? What about those RFID's (p.198)? "We the People" are under attack by the corporate elite as never before (p.200). The `Epilogue' says that you may not believe everything in this book, but these elements can't be ignored even if it is unpleasant. The last chapters are "the most painful and frightening of all". Jesse says we are in the most danger since 1776 (p.202). This book was composed from documentation. Do you think we need a "Truth Commission"?

Valuable message, but too much padding.
By Max Power
I heard David Gillespie interviewed on the radio, and was very taken with the messages he gave - that you can lose a lot of weight by cutting out sugar (including excess fruit), that it's not fat that's the enemy - it's sugar, and that even if you don't need to lose weight, you will feel much better overall if you cut out sugar. This was all news to me, and, although I'm a Slim Jim, I was interested in the health and wellbeing side of things. So I bought the e-book.

But I read it in ten minutes. There was a lot, lot, lot of padding, which didn't add much. Some rationale or science is useful, but it all could have been much briefer. The recipes, full of sugar substitutes, weren't at all useful for me.

David's underyling messages were simple, and a small, well designed booklet would have done the job. But thank you, David, for changing my life. The highs and lows in my day have evened out, I don't get bloated, and I don't get the munchies. Buy the book if you want to, or you could cut out sugar, and see how you go.

Simple, But It Works.
By thesweetersong
Perhaps I'm too simplistic for the dietary world, but for me, the diets that have worked the best are the diets that have very few rules and very few complicated ingredients. David Gillespie's book is exactly that: simple, uncomplicated, and practical.

The one theme of the book, and hence, one rule is: don't eat sugar.

Who knew three words could alter everything, if followed through?

I had around twelve kilograms to lose, and following that simple phrase, I lost ten of them in six months. I had a new lease of life - no longer was I foggy headed, fatigued in the afternoon, I no longer had insane mood swings, feeling bloated and miserable after eating, sporadic headaches, and my concentration increased. The Sweet Poison Quit Plan doesn't really say much on the exercise, but I walked around two kilometres three times a week, and the weight just fell off. With exercise, it's to be expected that you're in the fast lane.

The book was written in a fairly casual manner that was relaxing and enjoyable. Gillespie just sounds like your typical Aussie, which, if he was considering going international with the book, he'd have to fix. But, for me, I found it a good, solid read with a lot of helpful information when it came to the facts, statistics, what to look out for in the supermarkets, where sugar was hidden and in what foods.

It's definitely a life changer, and I would wholeheartedly recommend it.

Mastermind: How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes, by Maria Konnikova

No fictional character is more renowned for his powers of thought and observation than Sherlock Holmes. But is his extraordinary intellect merely a gift of fiction, or can we learn to cultivate these abilities ourselves, to improve our lives at work and at home?
We can, says psychologist and journalist Maria Konnikova, and in Mastermind she shows us how. Beginning with the "brain attic"--Holmes's metaphor for how we store information and organize knowledge--Konnikova unpacks the mental strategies that lead to clearer thinking and deeper insights. Drawing on twenty-first-century neuroscience and psychology, Mastermind explores Holmes's unique methods of ever-present mindfulness, astute observation, and logical deduction.
In doing so, it shows how each of us, with some self-awareness and a little practice, can employ these same methods to sharpen our perceptions, solve difficult problems, and enhance our creative powers. For Holmes aficionados and casual readers alike, Konnikova reveals how the world's most keen-eyed detective can serve as an unparalleled guide to upgrading the mind.

Excellent title, but slightly disappointing content
By Michael S.
The first thing that strikes you as you read through the book is that it feels like a collection of essays and articles stretched into a book more than a fluid book itself. Indeed, Mastermind was based on a series of articles that the author wrote for two different web sites: Big Think and Scientific American.

Another issue with the book is that it isn't quite sure if it wants to be a psychology book, explaining key cognitive concepts through the framework of Sherlock Holmes, or a pop culture book, looking at what Sherlock Holmes can tell us about cognition and psychology. As a result, it fails to really be either. The book alternates between analyzing the deductive prowess of Sherlock Holmes and explaining current research in cognitive psychology, but the switch between the two is sometimes jarring. There isn't a fluid amalgamation of the two. Furthermore, it struggles to be an elaborate analysis of Holmes' deductive reasoning, with latter chapters reframing concepts from earlier ones. The book takes a very long time to explain too few concepts that require less detail than what is actually given.

The book ultimately might be mistitled. One would expect a book subtitled "How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes" to actually have instructive steps and exercises, but it does not. The only clear recommendation is to maintain a journal. Other elements are analyzed, but no actual instructions are given on how to successfully implement them in daily life. For example, after reading extensively about mindfulness, you really only come away with the idea that you have to be more mindful, and very little on how exactly to set up a successful regimen to train yourself to be more mindful.

Most of the book can be summed up with the idea of simply being mindful of your surroundings and your thinking methodology - essentially meta-thinking - yet the book only approaches a few key elements of critical thinking, and there is not enough of an examination of the actual process of deductive reasoning. It talks about imagination and knowing your own weaknesses, but fails to cover any significant ground on memory techniques to improve recall. Holmes wasn't just a great deductive logician, but also had a keen memory.

Lastly, much of the final chapter seems like it was tacked on for good measure, but it was wholly unnecessary. In fact, the final chapter is mostly an examination of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's spiritualism and foray into a faerie investigation. Konnikova seems almost apologetic for Doyle's folly, asking us to remember to see things through the context of Doyle's life and surroundings. It seemed vastly out of place.

Mastermind is an excellent choice for those who are fans of Sherlock Holmes and want to see how his abilities relate to cognitive psychology, but if you've taken a college level course on memory and learning, you'll already be familiar with the concepts presented in this book. If you're looking for instructions on how to actually think like Sherlock Holmes, you'll come away with about four or five ideas to ponder as you think about your own thought processes, but ultimately you'll want to examine reasoning and critical thinking topics in other books for more details.

How to be more observant and less prone to drawing faulty conclusions
By Bernie Gourley
This is a book about how to be more observant while avoiding the pitfalls of drawing faulty conclusions based on unsound reasoning, tainted memory, or faulty assumptions. Examples from the canon of Sherlock Holmes (i.e. the 4 novels and 56 short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) are prevalent throughout the book, but Konnikova also discusses Doyle’s limited real life investigations as well as those of the men who influenced the writer. Doyle lived at time when science and reason were making great strides in overcoming superstitious and spurious ways of thinking, and so the Sherlock Holmes works were cutting edge for their time.

The book is neatly organized into four parts with two chapters each. The first part is entitled “Understanding Yourself” and it unpacks what we have to work with in the human brain. One learns how one’s brain works and how it sometimes leads one astray. It also introduces how the scientific method can provide a framework to harness the brain’s strengths and avoid the hazards of its weaknesses.

Part II investigates how one can become more skilled at investigation, as well as the role played by creativity and imagination. We learn how our attention is much more limited than we feel it to be.

The third part reflects upon the building one’s powers of reasoning as well as the importance of knowledge-building in the process. Konnikova describes “deductive reasoning” using Holmes’s favorite term. [She doesn’t really get into the whole muddle of—as many have pointed out—the fact that Holmes more often uses induction than deduction, i.e. going from very specific observations to draw broader conclusions.] The second chapter considers the importance of being knowledgeable and broadly educated. Holmes’s conclusions often hinge on fairly arcane knowledge about a range of issues: animal, vegetable, and mineral. However, a large part of the discussion is about the idea of degree of confidence. It’s also pointed out that knowledge can be double-edged sword—an impediment as well as a tool. Extraneous knowledge may lead one down the wrong path.

The final part suitably closes the book with one chapter on practical advice for how to put all of the knowledge discussed in the book to work and another on the recognition that even the best minds can go astray. The first chapter summarizes as it offers pragmatic advice. The second of these chapters discusses a fascinating investigation of a supernatural phenomenon (i.e. the existence of fairies from photographic evidence) upon which even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s mind led him astray.

The use of the Sherlock Holmes character is beneficial as many readers have consumed the entire Holmsian canon, or will do so, because it’s short and readable even today. Even those who haven’t read it will at least be familiar with the lead character and his proclivities as well as the other essential characters, such as Dr. Watson, Professor Moriarty, and Irene Adler. There are too many television shows, movies, and pop culture references to not be aware of these characters. One needn’t have read all Doyle’s Holmes to benefit, as Konnikova offers the essential background. However, one might find it a bit more intriguing if one has read the canon. At the end of each chapter, Konnikova offers a set of references that point to the sections in the Sherlock Holmes canon relating to that chapter’s discussion. Konnikova uses quotes and stories that aren’t attributable to Doyle to good effect throughout this book as well.

Graphics are used sparsely and only as absolutely necessary. There is a “Further Reading” section at the end of the book in addition to the end of chapter pointers. Besides a list of the Sherlock Holmes books, there are chapter by chapter prose suggestions of relevant key readings.

I found this book interesting and informative. While it may be most useful for someone who wants to become more attentive, less prone to biases, and more effective in drawing conclusions, it could also be enjoyed by Sherlock Holmes fans as a way to drill down into stories a bit further.

great psychological insights
By Michael George
The book Mastermind is an expression of a deep appreciation of the Sherlock Holmes stories, which were evidently read to the author as a young girl, and inspired her. Her psychological viewpoint on the main characters, Watson and Holmes, is interesting, and has motivated me to read the Arthur Conan Doyle tales of Sherlock Holmes. We can see Watson and Holmes, quite often, as we read Dr. Konnikova’s book, as personifications of different ways of reacting to events: A fast, efficient, possibly easily erroneous approach (the Watson approach), and a more disciplined, possibly quite inefficient, but thoughtful, sometimes counterintuitive approach (the Holmes approach). This is somewhat stereotypical, and also draws on fairly familiar psychological schemes, but, when mixed all together, and personalized in this way, it is actually quite interesting. By showing this as stereotypes, we see how to think like Watson (our more common mode of thinking) and how to think like Holmes (in a more thoughtful and mindful way). In addition, we see the interactions between Watson and Holmes, and that the success of Holmes often depends to some extent on first making some quick (Watson), incorrect assessments, so that one (the Mastermind) is thrown to focus on certain important observations. The idea that the Mastermind is, to a certain extent, a combination or amalgam, an interaction between Watson and Holmes, and not Holmes, himself, that prepares Holmes to deal with the subtle deceptions and deviousness of the criminal mind, is a powerful picture. However, if we see this person emerging, say, as the author of the tales (Arthur Conan Doyle), we must still bear in mind that even the Mastermind is only human, and a product of his or her times and points of view. This is emphasized in the last chapter of the book, where we see Arthur Conan Doyle’s judgment at fault in an amusing, but deceptive situation, which we look at with modern eyes, from a very different culture and a very different viewpoint. I recommend this book strongly as the Dr. Konnikova truly communicates her love for the Sherlock Holmes tales, and also illuminates the Mastermind for us.
