About the Author

MIKKEL BORG BJERGSO is founder of one of Denmark's pioneer microbreweries, Mikkeller. After working as a Mathematics and Physics teacher, Mikkel decided to use his skills to experiment at home making a variety of different beers. From here stemmed a world-respected company exporting their beers to 40 different countries, making house beers for some of the most prominent restaurants in Denmark and collaborating with innovative microbreweries around the world, including Three Floyds and Anchorage. After mastering the brewery side of the business, Mikkel has expanded, setting up his own bars and shops which can now be found in large cities across the globe, from Bangkok to his home city of Copenhagen.

PERNILLE PANG spent five years working in journalism, including writing for the Danish newspaper, Politiken, before becoming a freelance writer in 2010. Since then she has written on various topics spanning from China to local cultural news writing for an array of companies such as Mikkeller, the Royal Theatre and Stella.

Somewhat basic info, but some cool looking recipes are in the book.

I mainly picked up this book because I love Mikkeller. As a very avid home brewer most of the book is very basic. I know all the styles and know how to brew so about 90% of the content is sort of useless. The cool parts are the first few chapters that tell his story of founding the brewery and of course the recipes. I am looking forward to trying some of them out. I was also surprised to see a recipe in the book for FSW Wookey Jack!.

I was really excited about the recipes in the book, but found that I had to google around a bit to address some of the mistakes in them.

Really a cute book, but I wish the recipes had been proofed a bit better. If you're looking for recipes ready to brew, have beersmith handy and godspeed.

Flaked Mats

I bought Mikkeller's Book of Beer primarily for the recipes. The book delivers in that department! It's also nice to get a history of Mikkeller. The section on beer types is a bit elementary, but could be useful to those who haven't read John Palmer's How to Brew. The layout and art are pleasant and I think it's a nice beer table (see what I did there) book that even the casual beer appreciator will enjoy flipping through.

The Soulless Grave picks up where The Lure of Fools left off, hits the ground running, and never looks back.

The Soulless Grave picks up right where The Lure of Fools left off, throwing the reader straight back into action as Jekaran is brought before the king, Maely and Ezra continue their separate hunts for Jekaran, and Kairah experiences otherworldly dreams indicating the death and destruction the Eater brings with him. Meanwhile, we're introduced to new players, some of whom will undoubtedly carry over into the final chapter of The Age of the Infinite, and others who will only appear here.

Depending on how you like your books written, the narrative of The Soulless Grave may be a boon or a hindrance. As someone who doesn't regularly re-read novels, I fall into the latter camp. The Soulless Grave literally picks up where The Lure of Fools leaves off, and never looks back. There are references to events that occur in The Lure of Fools, but they are rarely—if ever—recapped for the reader. This isn't a problem if you read one novel after the other (or have inhuman levels of retention), but when you've got a year or more separating your last trip to Shaelar, references to past events or characters can be a bit hard to recollect.

I never had a problem with the writing or style in The Lure of Fools, but in my edition, there are a number of punctual errors that should have been caught and cleared up in editing. This was severely tempered in the sequel, with only a few noticeable errors that should have been picked up in editing. This might sound like a nitpick, but things like that tend to take me out of the story, so the lack of those allowed me to focus on the story and stay invested in what I was reading.

The story is well-crafted, and seems more original than The Lure of Fools, even though this is a continuation of that novel's story. Other reviewers noted that The Lure of Fools "borrowed" elements from Star Wars or The Lord of the Rings—which is fine, mind you, we all are influenced by the things we love—but the feeling of elements being borrowed or influenced by other literature or media wasn't noticeable to me in The Soulless Grave. The story moved briskly, and I never felt myself longing for a chapter to be over, and rarely did I find myself longing to move to another narrative viewpoint. The only exception was with Maely—not because of how she was written, but I just didn't relate to her journey or find myself as invested as I did with Jekaran, Ezra, Kairah, and other characters. This was undoubtedly a personal preference, and other readers may be very invested in Maely's story.

What I ultimately found interesting was that the story, in my opinion, hit something of a "reset" by the time the book ended. There are still plot threads to be wrapped up, and my opinion may change by the time Jason King releases The Fork of Destiny's Road, but this book has a larger sense of finality to it than The Lure of Fools did. The Lure of Fools came to something of an abrupt end for me, but this had a satisfying conclusion. I felt like the wait between The Soulless Grave and The Fork of Destiny's Road will allow time to digest the story, and leave me ready to return for the final visit to Shaelar next year.

All in all, The Soulless Grave is a good story. The characters are well-rounded, each has their own arc, and there are plenty of twists and turns, and a shocking goodbye to a primary character. If anything, I would recommend picking up The Lure of Fools and The Soulless Grave and reading them back-to-back in order to more easily follow the narrative of The Age of the Infinite.

I was very impressed with Jason King's debut novel 'The Lure of Fools', and have eagerly been awaiting the next installment ever since. 'The Soulless Grave' delivered and then some. It picks up right after the cliffhanger ending of the original, but the narration is descriptive enough that most readers shouldn't have too much difficulty following along even if they hadn't read 'Lure' (but you SHOULD read Lure too - it's really good!). From there, 'The Soulless Grave' is a fast paced, action packed adventure that adds interesting new characters, as well as expanding on the backstory of existing characters for a new level of depth I found very gratifying. King's system of magic through the use of 'talises' is very clever, and his antagonist 'Jove' is one of the flat out creepiest villains I've ever read. The ending doesn't leave you hanging quite as much as the first installment, but there are still plenty of unresolved story lines that leave you thirsting for more. Book three in King's 'Age of the Infinite' trilogy can't come soon enough!!!

Who Is Hungry For More?

I loved the first book, the Lure of Fools, and this second installment in the series did not disappoint! Big surprises, plenty of action, and (gasp) not everyone lives to the end. The only thing I would change is not within the book itself, but in my approach as the reader. I wish I had re-read the Lure of Fools to re-familiarize myself with the intricate happenings. The Soulless Grave is "Go!" from the first page and I think any stopping to re-visit things from the first book would slow down the story. As voracious fantasy readers, I don't think anyone among us has ever read a great book and then thought "That was awesome...I think I'll wait a while before picking up the next one." So read the first book and waste no time diving into this one. It's quite fitting that this book leaves you asking "So...who's hungry?"

Monsters, Faeries, Witches, and different other creatues of lore Rule

Great read, beautiful illustrations and entertaining for the whole family, even your pets. Highly recommend it. Check out Night Creatures, Phantom Encounters, Wizard and Witches, Water Spirits, Dragons, Faeries, and a whole lot of the others. You won't be disappointed! What I love is the book cover itself, it has a unique hard back with a cloth cover with a beautiful illustration on the cover, and on the inside the pages are glossy and smooth, with stories that goes in depth which you can Google or go to your local library for further insight! Try this book and read it, I guarantee reading the first three pages will have you hooked and then you will want to buy and investigate more stories and books of "The Enchanted World".
The books came out in the 80's and I remember them being advertised on TV and back then they were expensive of course and I couldn't afford them. Now you can get them from the library or amazon very cheap like 0.01! and the books are still good as new,trust me on this. Order today.

Satisfying

Although there are not very many creatures it covers, it is very insightful and well written. It only talks about Sea Serpents, Sasquatch, and the Loch Ness Monster(s).

Author of True Events of the Paranormal highly recommends this classic

A true classic for any cryptozoology fan or paranormal book buff. For years I've been researching both ancient cryptids and Sasquatch, for I've had several encounters with Bigfoot type creatures and mysterious felines (Wampus cats) here in the Appalachian Mountains of the United States. One must take to mind that those skeptical of such mysterious animals must note that the African gorilla remained only as a myth until its discovery in the late 1800s. This book also includes a series of photos that helps you understand the meaning of mysterious creatures and things that go bump in the night while your camping in an area that your're not the ruler of.

A Great Overview of CI in the .NET World

I still remember the first time I was on a project that used NAnt and CruiseControl.NET. It was years ago and both were new tools with plenty of bugs. The project manager took one of the team's architects and dedicated him to getting CI up and running. I didn't work with him for another 9 months. It was a complete nightmare. Every morning was dedicated to finding out why the builds failed, fixing the issue, and then manually rerunning the builds until successful. Then it was off to show management the new build reports. It didn't take long for them to not want to be hassled with the process. A year after it all began the code base was removed from the CI process and went back to manual builds.

Not a very good story to start the review of a book on CI that I highly recommend you read. Times have changed, the tools have improved, and with books like this available you have no reason to not give CI a go. You may have plenty of excuses, but no reasons. Luckily this book contains a nice summary of excuses commonly used and does a nice job of debunking them.

The book starts off with a chapter titled Understanding continuous integration which gives a nice overview of CI and introduces the CI tools. They include source control, CI server, feedback mechanism, build manager, unit test framework, documenting, and code-analysis tools.

The book continues with chapters on Setting up a source control system, Automating the build process, Choosing the right CI server, Continuous feedback, Unit testing continuously integrated code, Performing integration, system, and acceptance testing, Analyzing the code, Generating documentation, Deployment and delivery, Continuous database integration, and Extending continuous integration.

One of the things I like about the book is that it is .NET centric and not Microsoft centric. It introduces the Microsoft tools, other vendor's tools, and open source tools. For example Subversion, TFS, SourceSafe, Git, and Vault are introduced as source control options, Nant and MSBuild are introduced as build tools, and CruiseControl.NET, TFS 2010, and TeamCity as CI servers.

The authors do a great job of providing in-depth examples of the different tools and technologies. The example's accompanying downloadable code is very well organized and usable.

Although implementing CI can be a big change for a team, this book will definitely help educate you and your team on all the different tools available in the context of .NET projects. That give a big advantage when planning your team's path to CI.

All in all I highly recommend using CI on your projects, but I recommend reading this book first even more.

This is a great book for beginners, but doesn't go into great details that you ultimately need to become an expert. The book probably covers 50-60% of the things you'll need, the rest is your own research and trial/error process.

Five stars all around!

The book is well written. The authors have gathered so much information in this book that it will help those of you who want to use CI. I'd heartily recommend this book for anyone making the transition to Continuous Integration in the .NET world.
It is simple to rate this book: every .NET team not using Continuous Integration should own and read this book!
I have been using CI in my own team, and have also been assisting several clients in setting up CI. Over the past several years, I have seen many teams using CI just to compile their code. If your team is doing just that, than this is the book you need to read and follow. All CI concepts are illustrated with examples. The authors use a large number of diagrams, tables, and code snippets with detailed explanations.

Note: This was also the first technical book which I read on my Kindle, and the rendering of the diagrams, tables, code snippets was just great.

Target Audience:
The target audience for this book is the entire .NET development team. For a beginner trying to understand Continuous Integration, for a Tester who wants the system to be in a working state before and after integration, and the Manager who want to reduce risks, this book will give a solid foundation of CI and its concepts. It is for all kinds of .NET developers: Beginners, Intermediate as well as Experienced CI users.

The authors cover several tools required for setting up a successful CI system, and the book has working examples to setup and use each of the tools listed below. The list below itself makes this book an important part of every .NET developer's arsenal.

About the Author
Jim Ryan, is a mammalogist and a co-author on Mammalogy, a college textbook (5th edition) published by Jones & Bartlett Publishers in 2010. He is also the author of Adirondack Wildlife, A Field Guide, published by the University Press of New England. In addition, Professor Ryan has published numerous scientific articles in professional journals. He has conducted field research around the world, including sites in Madagascar, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Trinidad, and Ecuador. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, The National Geographic Society, and other funding agencies.

One of the few textbooks I've read on my own.

I purchased this for my 4000 level Mammalogy class. After the second week I discovered that 19 hours of all math and science classes was a bit much and with Mammalogy being the only optional class I was signed up for - It was the class that had to be dropped. I was devastated since it was my favorite of all of my classes, but it was the right thing to do. Anyway - even though I won't be taking this class until the spring, I still find myself reading this book. It's complex enough that you feel like you are learning something when reading, but clean enough that you don't really need an instructor there to fully understand. Now this is not a deep study of the systems and such, rather an overview of the different families and their systems and structural differences. This is an excellent intro to mammalogy and covers everything from the evolution of the different systems to distinguishing features. Very good text book. I would have liked a few colored pictures but it's not a huge issue.

The organization is somewhat poor, in my opinion. I had it for my mammalogy class in college and it was difficult to read and take the necessary information, as there was so much. It goes off on tangents, rather than summarizing things better and connecting facts. Unless your professor assigns it, I would suggest a different book.

Difficult to get through

I am an avid book reader, and I love to read books! This book however, is a few years old and a bit difficult to read through sometimes. It was written by a professor who taught a class on Science, Technology, and Society, so they are very knowledgeable. However, they don't exactly bridge the gap between people who have never read on this subject before, and the material they need to learn. I recommend the book simply because it is a requirement for many classes, though if an updated version of this with less abstract and more poignant language was used, I would be much happier with it.

Very theory-heavy

This book takes an interesting topic and makes it pretty boring. Additionally, much of the technology discussed is woefully out of date, as this book was published in 1991. I would not mind a newer edition if it could be made more pertinent to the state of science and technology in current society.

A great, easy-to-read book on American Civilization

I chose this book to teach a course in American Culture and History at the university level - and I don't regret doing so. It offers an interesting point of view on American history, very accessible, weaving together culture and history. Chapters are split by theme, and therefore it is easy to organize a course around this. In my country, the university term is split into 12 weeks, which is easily compatible with the organization of this book.

Nice illustrations and the list of terms at the end of each chapter is helpful.

It is great that the publisher has a page where you can view the topics, chapter by chapter, and you can find websites with more information about each topic. There are also film recommendations, and I had my students watch some of the recommended films to compliment the topics covered each week.

Just 2 issues that cost the publication minus 2 stars in my review:

KINDLE/NON-KINDLE: What I miss are some topics that seem so significant in American history. There is no actual coverage on the War for Independence or the Civil War. They are mentioned, yes, but just in a sort of "passing-by." These two wars form the foundation of the USA (constitution and Civil rights), so, why aren't they covered?

KINDLE: I had already bought the paperback edition, but because I teach the book, I decided to buy the Kindle edition as well. Why? I wanted to be able to copy/paste into my lectures (just for myself, not my students), that is, into the Notes Pages of my Power Point lectures. I copied-pasted, copied-pasted, and then suddenly a message: "You have finished the quota set by the publisher for copying from this book." I think that a warning should be set, before you download a book, that only a certain amount of copying can be done. Now, I have a Kindle edition that is useless to me because I have the paperback, anyway. I bought the book twice.
