The Buffalo Tail by Daniel T. "Bud" Kelly, Jr., is in part a sequel to The Buffalo Head, his father's history of the Kelly family's pioneer mercantile trading company, Gross Kelly & Co., which traces its origins to 1867. The Buffalo Tail recounts Bud's liquidation of the company in1954 in an era of modern mercantilism in which a pioneering trading company could no longer be competitive. The story moves on to describe the author's subsequent adventures as the proprietor of an insurance company in Santa Fe, recounting the rewards and hazards of insuring such clients as uranium mines, ranches, apple orchards, Santa Fe artists, galleries and the Santa Fe opera.

Kelly's memoir begins with the often humorous events of his early life as a cowboy on New Mexican ranches, regaling the reader with tales of his later prep school and college days at Harvard, and events during his tours of duty in World War II and the Korean conflict. The book moves on to relate stories of his marriage to Jeanne Wise and their family life in Santa Fe, and of his involvement in Santa Fe civic organizations and educational institutions. Kelly movingly chronicles the difficult loss of Jeanne in 1993 and goes on to tell of his subsequent adventures traveling in Europe and Asia and his activities back home in New Mexico, working on his beloved ranch in the Pecos. The Buffalo Tail is not only the story of one man's adventurous and fulfilling life; the book also recounts a piece of the civic and commercial history of the New Mexican West.

Abilio Est�vez usa prosa po�tica donde los cinco sentidos son el componente principal de una met�fora sexual. Donde el amanecer sexual de un j�ven, Jos�n, comienza con la visi�n del jardinero--Daniel (Tito Jamaica), sigue con las lecturas de las novelillas er�ticas de su padre, Sargento de bronze--un veterinario en los a�os 50 en el barrio Marianao de La Habana, Cuba--sigue con la imaginaci�n sexual que ocasiona el retrato del primo Luj�n--quien muriera en un accidente en las playas de La Habana--y se completa con el acto sexual de Jose�n con H�ctor Gal�n--su primer amante.

Recomiendo este libro para aquellos que deseen recordar sus primeras reflexiones eroticas, para aquellos que deseen experimentar en cada capitulo una buena dosis de ruborizacion y/o excitaci�n, para aquellos hombres que adoran hombres y mujeres que adoran hombres y mujeres que adoran mujeres y cualquiera que sea la combinacion. Pero recomiendo este libro mas que nada para el que quiera leer un libro escrito con sabiduria, a un autor de grandes textos y grandes pasiones. Una leccion humana.

Beginners beware

I do not consider myself evil, nor do I consider myself a genius, maybe that is why I'm having so many issues with this book. This book contains great project ideas. That is why I bought it. However, as I am new to electronics and the arduino platform, some of the mistakes in the book can cause great frustration. In the few projects I have tried, the schematic diagram, breadboard layout, and photograph of complete breadboard do not match. The first example is Project 4. The program from project 3 says use digital pin 12. The schematic diagram Fig. 3-5 says digital pin 11, and the breadboard layout fig 3-6 and photograph of complete breadboard fig 3-8 shows it connected to digital pin 12. This one is easy to figure out, however, breadboard layout fig 3-6 also shows Luxeon LED connecting to the wrong pin on the T1-BD139. It is hard to see, but it is showing it connected to the same pin as the 270 Ohm resistor. You need to look at the photograph of the complete breadboard fig 3-8 to see the correct way to wire the circuit. This is also incorrect on Fig 4-6 Breadboard layout for project 6.

Second example: the Components and equipment for project 7: Shows "R4-5 4 Ohm 2W resistor" This doesn't match the Schematic Fig 4-9, where you need two 4 Ohm 1 Watt (not 2 Watt) resistors.

I then jumped ahead to Project 28, which I'm still trying to figure out how to configure correctly. The Schematic diagram Fig. 9-8 has the IC1 component connected to Digital pin 9. The Breadboard layout has it connected to digital pin 3. The photograph fig 9-7 has it connected to digital pin 9. The text says it is connected to digital pin 9, so I assume three to one this is correct. The 100 Ohm resistor in the picture fig 9-7 is connected to ground. In the schematic it is connected to the arduino on digital pin 3, on the breadboard layout fig 9-9 it is again connected to ground. The picture on the arduinoevilgenuis web site is currently showing it connected to ground [...]. The web site referenced in the book is showing it connected to digital pin 3. [...]

I understand everyone makes mistakes. I'm looking forward to a web page that will correct the mistakes in the book.

A good way into electronics

I had never even heard of Arduino boards but was lead here by the "Evil Genius" bit of the title whilst looking to improve my electronics knowledge. I have now bought the Arduino kit (clone because it is cheaper) and have had a go at a couple of the simpler projects which worked well. I was initially worried about the programming side given that it is C, but the Ardunio environment and clear explanation (and code listing) for each project made it a breeze. When I get time I will try more ambitious projects (particularly looking forward to the servo controlled lazer). Highly recommended.

A Superb Starter Book for Arduino

This is the clearest introduction to the Arduino microcontroller development system I have read. I'm a tinkerer and every page in this book made me want to buy it and write notes and ideas in it.

I jot brainstorms and questions in the margins - create links to other pages - correct a few minor errors and ambiguities ("darn it, is it pin 11 or pin 12?"). I write in updates and corrections from the ArduinoEvilGenius-com website. My copy is a dog's breakfast of pencil smudges, beverage stains and sticky notes.

30 Arduino Projects catches the spirit of the mildly mischievous Evil Genius Series. It is light-hearted, conversational, and fun-loving. Beautifully and clearly written; with tremendous respect for readers and what they really need to know.

Before finding this book, I was frustrated by Arduino books which were too fluffy, pompous, or just too complicated. This book hits the sweet spot for me.

North American readers may be confused by what seems to be a RadioShack parts list in the back of the book. Even the part numbers look like RadioShack numbers. But in fact, "RS" stands for the UK RadioSpares company. It is still worth checking the RadioSpares-com website for useful information. Luckily, the author gives a general list of other suppliers and sources.

Some of the photos are too murky to give more than a general idea of the actual layout of the schematic. Fortunately there is usually a line-drawing as well.

All of the programming is available as a quick, one-time, free download from the author's web site. I've never used "C" before and my high-school BASIC is rusty. But this friendly author explains and clarifies as you go along. By starting all my own programs ("sketches" in Arduino jargon) by over-typing one of his, I get very few "grammatical" errors. I do get unexpected results though about half the time. But puzzling through my mistakes is very satisfying.

30 Arduino Projects is a rare book. Thanks to the author for his dedication and hard work on this book. It has pointed me in the right direction, and truly gotten me started learning more about this fascinating hobby.

It's All Right Here. All of it.

I shouldn't even be writing this review because doing so only creates my competition. I'm writing it for Robert McKee out of respect and love for him as one of the best instructors I've never met. I have both STORY and now, DIALOGUE in hardcover, on my Kindle, and the audio version (he narrates his books) in my headphones. I read it, I listen to it and take it with me when I travel. Sometimes I listen and read at the same time. Most nights I listen to the audio version in my sleep. In other words, I eat, sleep and breathe this book. I did the same thing with Story, his other book. I may go to my grave never fully comprehending the vast wealth of knowledge contained in these two books. That's OK. What I can tell you is this. With nothing but STORY as my guide, my very first screenplay took seven months and thirty-five drafts from start to finish. But. That screenplay became a Hallmark Movies and Mysteries feature film. The producers liked it so much they gave me another assignment. That one took six weeks, and they bought the first draft. I'm now working on my fifth script; this one is in the six-figure category, with five figures upfront just for the Treatment. And I owe it all to everything I've learned from studying Robert McKee, supplemented by what I learned from everyone else. Over the past thirty years, I’ve studied with forty plus instructors and highlighted hundreds of books and listened to dozens of recorded seminars. All that information is summed up and thoroughly explained in Robert McKee's two books STORY and now DIALOGUE. I won't live long enough to absorb everything he teaches. And I still study two hours a day as a warm up for my writing. I’d recommend Aaron Sorkin, Warner Hertzog, William Goldman (both Sorkin and McKee say he's the greatest), Blake Synder, Chris Vogler, Michael Hauge, William Akers, and anybody else you can find who’s willing to share their knowledge. Because you never know when a concept you didn’t realize you didn’t understand or needed is going to show up. Especially when presented from a different perspective. Having said that, if you are serious, and I mean dead serious, about becoming a working screenwriter, or any other kind of fiction writer for that matter, then you have no choice but to study McKee like your literary life depends on it. Buy the hardcover, buy the Kindle version, and buy the audio version of DIALOGUE and STORY. And supplement these two works with any other material that speaks to you. If you do this, you will become a first class screenwriter or novelist or playwright, because all three genres are only different ways of presenting a Story. If you can’t commit to this, unless you’re a genius or prodigy, you’re wasting valuable time which could be spent following your true life calling. But if your heart’s desire is to become a working writer, then sooner or later you’ll have to know everything in McKee’s two books. So, you might as well bite the bullet and jump in head first. It's all right here in STORY and DIALOGUE. All of it. Thank you, Mr. McKee. You, sir, changed my life.-- Jimmy Hager

ONE OF THE TWO BEST BOOKS ON SCREENWRITING

Probably the best book on screenwriting ever (besides Egri), though there is also much here for the novelist and playwright. I am a professional TV writer, of long-standing (35 years), and I can tell you I used this book to figure out how to fix the problems of a complex pilot I'm writing; the author truly " guided me home." And lest you think I'm a McKee sycophant, I am not. I found little in STORY for me. The only thing I disagree with in DIALOGUE is that the author sells his own work short: it isn't just for those who are "lost" in their writing, like me, and the student, it's for anyone who writes fiction for a living, in any form, no matter how much experience they have. It's that good.

Excellent supplement to 'Story' - with examples of speech from popular stories that really drive home the content. It shows how to immerse dialogue into your scene(s) to give the words more meaning, and in a tension-raising-cycle, turn and give the scene itself more impact. I enjoy writing dialogue more with this better perspective of what to look for, and what questions to ask before giving my characters words. This is a book that will get multiple re-reads for reference and increase in understanding as I look to improve my craft and skill-set. Thanks Robert and company!
