Un libro excelente

Es un pedazo de novela negra, muy bien documentada y con una trama impecablemente tejida en la que hasta el mism�simo final no se consigue adivinar qui�n puede ser ese asesino al que la prensa llama “basajaun”. La autora deja caer con maestr�a una pista por aqu�, otra por all�, como si fueran miguitas de pan, pero estoy segura de que hasta los lectores de novela negra m�s experimentados lo tendr�n dif�cil para pillarla, porque Dolores Redondo ha elaborado la intriga con el mimo de un buen pastelero (no en vano la familia de la inspectora Amaia Salazar se dedica a la pasteler�a) y el final no es para nada previsible.

Pero “El guardi�n invisible” es, en mi opini�n, mucho m�s que una novela negra. Y no solo por la original idea de introducir en la trama elementos de mitolog�a vasca y algunas escenas inquietantes de las que hacen que un leve escalofr�o nos baje por la columna vertebral. Lo que me ha llamado poderosamente la atenci�n es c�mo se adentra Dolores Redondo en la psicolog�a de sus personajes, algo que suelo echar en falta en muchas novelas negras o de misterio, que se centran exclusivamente en resolver el asesinato (o los asesinatos) de turno, relegando a los personajes a ser simples figuras de cart�n piedra. Y esta novela posee, adem�s, lo que eleva a un libro por encima del mero producto de entretenimiento (y que conste que el entretenimiento no tiene nada de malo) para convertirlo en literatura de la buena: al igual que un hojaldre (por seguir con el s�mil pastelero) tiene m�ltiples capas y permite descubrir entre ellas nuevos y ricos matices.

Warm and human story

The story caught me for its warmth, authentic diaglogue, and humane characters. I enjoyed the description of the landscape and the feelings of magic of the place. I had travelled near that region; the story brought back many good memories of the mountains and small towns in the Pyrenees. Dolores Redondo is an excellent story-teller; in her novel, she shares her love and respect for the Baztan valley and its people. I also think that her decision to leave some words in Basque is a good one, it adds to the sense of magic in the landscape. I look forward to reading the upcoming books of the trilogy. In short, it is an excellent and humane story.

Un gran clich�

Mi novela negra ideal es aqu�lla que combina trama solida, atm�sfera inquietante y lenguaje efectivo. El guardi�n invisible dista mucho de serlo. Da la sensaci�n de que la autora haya seguido una de las recetas de sus personajes: 1 kg de asesino en serie, 100 g de mitolog�a y una loncha de drama familiar. Los ingredientes sin duda son de buena calidad, pero el resultado no es muy apetecible. Esos tres ingredientes no llegan a mezclarse nunca. Por una parte est� la trama, que se va diluyendo a lo largo de los cap�tulos (a veces a uno se le olvida de qu� va la cosa), hasta deshincharse por completo; por otra parte, el aspecto sobrenatural, anecd�tico y prescindible (si busco en Wikipedia mitolog�a vasca, encuentro mucho m�s), y por �ltimo, los personajes, planos e incoherentes. Es muy dif�cil identificarse con alguno de ellos, porque todos hablan con la misma voz, la de la autora. Da igual que nos d� mil detalles sobre la vida de cada uno de los protagonistas: los personajes no nos hablan. En definitiva, mucho ingrediente, poca elaboraci�n y menor aderezo. Soso.

Semler, the 34-year-old CEO, or "counselor," of Semco, a Brazilian manufacturing firm, describes how he turned his successful company into a "natural business" in which employees hire and evaluate their bosses, dress however they want, participate in major decisions, and share in 22 percent of the profits. In a sometimes breathless, often boyish manner, Semler, a counselor of a Brazilian company (Semco), relates the transformation of a traditionally structured business into one quite literally without walls and rules. Semler details his not-so-easy steps in the metamorphosis: abolishing dress codes and regulations; decentralizing plants; getting rid of paperwork and titles (hence, his appellation as counselor, not CEO); and creating a consultative democracy in which employees set their own salaries and work hours and vote on managerial candidates, among other responsibilities. If it sounds too much like utopia, Semler admits that Brazil's economic downturn has impacted Semco and that, yes, being born with a silver spoon certainly colors his vision. First 100 pages were great

I really liked the first 1/3 of this book up to page 100. But then past that I was struggling to finish it. I kept pushing myself to read a few more pages with hopes that it would get better. But finally stopped around page 200 and then skimmed through the remainder. The first part was great because it covers the authors story of running the company traditionally and then implementing a lot of the new policies. Which was very thought provoking and pretty amazing considering this was over 25 years ago.

After page 100 each chapter covered a story about hiring someone or moving them to another department. Or implementing something else. And it just became really boring and drawn out for me. And when he writes about subsidizing lunches for workers making less money, and allowing employees to set their own salaries based on things like living expenses it comes across to be a bit socialist leaning. And I don't mean that in a good or bad way. On the first page the author writes that it's not purely capitalistic or socialist. He writes that it's a new way. A third way. And it seems like that third way has borrowed tenets from each.

Anyway, This book should be read to challenge your current thinking and to read about a more democratic work environment. Even if you only make it to page 100. It should not be read as a complete guide for a company or as if everything covered is the absolute best way to do things.

My Favorite Business Book Ever

I must have bought people 20 copies of this book...at least. This book is the best distillation of what democracy, honesty, transparency and courage look like in the workplace. They produce spectacular financial result and deep fulfillment for the employees. I read this book in 2006 or earlier for the first time and I keep coming back to it over and over again. Although his business is a complex manufacturing business, you can apply the lessons here to small or large companies, sales organizations, restaurants, tech companies and non-profits. The book is radical...and surprisingly revolutionary. It also makes you realize, by describing in such detail what an ultra high trust work environment looks like, how much of our workplaces treat us like dishonest children...and we often fulfill those expectations. I don't say it lightly...but this book was life changing and still in for me...

The start of a new era?????

I bought this book because I read about Semco and what its boss had created.
From what I heard he had created a workplace that was democratic, fun to work at and all in all a good lesson of how companies can be run. So, when I found out he had written a book about it, I wanted to read it.

And I was not disappointed. He describes clearly and with great detail how he transformed his fathers company from a bureaucratic, top-down run company into a much more democratic and fun workplace. And it all started with allowing employees to vote on which color uniforms they want.

All in all, I love this book. It seems to be part of a new era about working differently from the past. Perhaps era is not the right word, but movement might be a better description. Other elements in this movement are ROWE from Jodi Thompson and Cali Ressler, Beyond Budgeting, Alexander Kjerulf with his Positive Sharing website as being the Chief Happiness Officer, Tim Ferriss with his Four Hour Workweek, the guys from 37signals and many others.

Schultz is the founder and CEO of Starbucks, a company that began as a small Seattle distributor of coffee beans and ground coffee that he transformed into what it is today, inspired by the espresso shops he visited in Italy. Schultz described the founding of Starbucks in his first book, Pour Your Heart into It (1997). Written with Joanne Gordon, a former Forbes writer and contributing editor, this account is a spotlight on the period of 2007�08, when the company lost some of its vision due to overexpansion and the pressure to maintain unabated growth. Seeing that Starbucks was becoming a victim of its own success, Schultz returned to the CEO position after eight years away from overseeing daily operations of the company. He details the struggle to maintain the identity of Starbucks while attempting to branch out into areas such as music sales and hot food, facing competition and the oversaturation that caused the company the painful closing of about 600 stores in 2008. This is one of those turnaround stories that illustrates that a company can overcome its growth pains by returning to its core principles. --David Siegfried

Starting a business is tough, but keeping it going is even tougher

I read this book specifically to better understand a CEO's perspective in starting a company and then coming back to save it. Howard Schultz's very personalized account demonstrates the commitment needed to keep a vision and mission statement going as later leaders start to vary from the initial vision and as the economy inevitably affects the business. Schultz casts some blame on leaders who succeeded him, but most of Starbucks' issues seemed to be caused by the recession more so than internal decisions. If one recalls how many personal finance experts were recommending to skip the $4 latte as a way of saving money, this loss of business they suffered through 2008-9 shouldn't have been too much of a surprise.

With that said, the book was still interesting in seeing the difficulty of micro-focusing on each individual customer experience while simultaneously macro-focusing on growth. There are definitely advantages to being on every street corner, but the more spread out the company becomes the harder it is to make that experience unique but consistent for those who want the same product and experience in any location, fast but leisurely for those who aren't in a hurry, and successful for the company that can't help but focus on growth when opening multiple stores every day. Schultz effectively describes all the variables he considered through this time period to "thread the needle" to get the best of this small and big focus.

While it's hard to recognize that the successful companies we depend upon are typically short-lived, this book does a good job of showing why. A founder's focus and commitment to the original vision for a company is difficult to pass on to successors who have to be equally if not more committed to pushing it forward and adapting to changing customer tastes and competitive threats. As Schultz points out here, his successors couldn't accomplish that even though they were good people. Like Michael Dell of Dell Computer, Schultz cared and resolved to come back and make the necessary adjustments to carry Starbucks through. The average CEO probably wouldn't do that. And--as other reviewers have observed--what will happen the next time Schultz retires. It's why so many businesses don't last over extended periods and inevitably submit to competitors who come up with better ideas.

Even several years after it was published, this book is a good read to understand these long-term challenges that all businesses face. Today--as Sears, J.C. Penney and (gasp) even Walmart--seem destined to fail, "Onward" helps to explain why killer business models must be constantly tweaked or else they will eventually stagger and then fail.

A Good Book

After reading Howard Schultz' first book "Pour Your Heart Into It" I must admit that I was highly excited to read is "sequel". However, I must admit that I was a bit disappointed. Not to say that this book was not a good book, because it actually was. Nevertheless, I feel that I expected more from this one.
Many of the chapters dragged on and I found a lot of the stories and lessons very repetitive.

However, I will add that I still admire Howard Schultz and everything that he has brought to the world in the Starbucks company. I also respect his business values and work ethics and feel that he is one to learn from and emulate. He fought the recession head on and was able to bring starbucks back to its glory.

My first suggestion to readers would be to read the first book mentioned above. Then you can read this book as sort of a suffix or even a quick read.

It's a book that discusses the re-energizing of a aging brand and a study of how to focus and lead in times of difficulty for a company. It also is a vehicle for the founder to express his passion for the firm he created, and how that drove the decisions and growth of the company. It also seems to be a platform to discuss his regrets for some difficult decisions along the way which I wish he would have gone through in some more detail. However, a great read for someone trying to understand what makes a company beyond the numbers.

Solid, colorful reference

This book is a handy clinical reference, and should be in every exotic or avian clinician's reference library. This is probably THE most useful technical reference on this subject, and the 2nd Edition is a slight improvement from the first. Alan Fudge's Book is similar and perhaps more affordable, but this is by far a more thorough reference.

A - Growing up, I loved books like Ender's Game and the Tom Clancy Jack Ryan series. When I sat down to write the Janus Group books, I wanted to capture what I liked best about those books - sci fi thrillers or action thrillers in a fast-paced style. The series is best characterized as cyberpunk science fiction thrillers, with a little detective and police procedural elements thrown in to boot. Finally, I like my characters to be relatable, and facing overwhelming odds - the plot is action-packed, and keeps you guessing. Beware: plot twists ahead!

Q - What order should I read the books in?�
A - Last Pursuit is a short story set in the Janus Group world - it's the prequel, and the story that inspired me to write a full series. You can read that first (for free), then Books 1-3 (Rath's Deception, Rath's Gambit, and Rath's Reckoning) in order from there. Books 1-3 are a complete story arc - Book 3 resolves everything from Books 1 and 2.

A great read!

*Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Also this is the third book in a series and NOT a standalone. You should have read the first two books before continuing on or you will be lost. There will be spoilers for the first two books ahead*

Rath's Reckoning is the third and final chapter of the Janus Group Trilogy and man was it fun! Just as great as the first two books in the series. The author did such a great job wrapping up this story. I was reading along just like how in the world is this going to work out? How are they going to be able to take down the Janus group? It just didn't seem possible, but then it was perfection. It came out of left field for me, but I loved every minute of it. Really I finished reading the book and turned to my husband just like "Oh man! You are never going to believe what happened! This book was so amazing!!" Fun times.

The end of the last book was quite the cliffhanger. Rath had just found Paisen in the jail planet she was on only to find the company had followed him to find them both. We were left with them being tied up in some company facility with employees ready to torture them for the foreseeable future. It really looked bleak for them, though Rath did have the cop, Beauceron, who would be looking for him.

This story starts right off with Beauceron trying to find Rath and saving him from his dire fate. You know throughout the whole series we have followed Beauceron and how he feels responsible for some cops deaths and him trying to find the Janus Group and hold them responsible for their crimes. I must say at times he got on my nerves in this book. I know he is a cop, but his blind optimism that they could somehow just walk up to the bad guys and put them on trial, that when things go bad they should turn themselves into the police even though that would mean losing whatever lead they had on the bad guys, his being so tunnel vision about it was frustrating. It was one of those yes, this might technically not be what you should do, but it is for the greater good. Do you want these people to pay for what they did or do you want them to kill you before you have a chance? After everything he has seen to almost underestimate the company was a bit surprising. He was just really rigid, but at the same time I get it. It is just not the way I would think in the situation.

Rath and Paisen were so much fun. They are finally working together to try and take away the threat for good (and get paid). Man at the beginning of the story you can just see Paisen getting annoyed with Rath and thinking you've got to be kidding me!? Why do I have to be stuck with this idiot?? Oh I loved it. That is one of the things I love about the story. Rath is not some super amazing does everything perfect kind of person. He is more real, more like what a normal person would be like in his situation. It is good that he has Paisen on his side because together they might have a chance.

There was a lot of action in this last chapter of the story which was great. With contractor 700 on their trail as well as the rest of the Janus Group they have a lot working against them. They get in some pretty sticky situations and somehow have to figure out a ways to not get killed. I loved all the technology in the story. I loved Rath's attachment to his backpack forge that he has been carrying around forever. I just loved this story. Like I said above I was getting towards the end of the story just thinking this is never going to work out, they are never going to be successful, but then it was just perfect how everything played out.

I really enjoyed this series and cannot say enough good things about it. I don't read a lot of sci fi, but I probably should. If they are anything like these books I will love them. So much fun, so much action and adventure, such evil bad guys, just such a great read.

Note: I was gifted an advance copy of this work for an honest read and review. The following review, as with all reviews, is my personal opinion of the submitted text.

Writing Style – 4.5/5.0 (Excellent)
As the closing part of this trilogy, this certainly felt stronger than its predecessors.
The structure was consistently good and the temporal line of the plot completely settled.

With the sub-plots quickly diminishing, the central plot became the sole focus for the story, and this reaped massive rewards as the characters gained stature and pulled the reader into the book.

Character Development – 4.0/5.0 (Very Good)
Dasi’s character seems to pull a little of the limelight away from the others for a large part of this offering, but this is not detrimental to the story at all and serves to draw the reader further into the story, as the plot winds up to an almost inevitable conclusion.

Rath and Paisen feel more rounded and more real, but I felt Beauceron was a little static as a central character in this episode.

Nevertheless, the secondary cast were excellent (occasionally a little wooden in their dialogue, but nicely drawn) and altogether, it made the story much richer.

Descriptive – 4.5/5.0 (Excellent)
I really thought I was onto a 5-out-of-5 here, as the descriptive does hit a much higher level, leaving far fewer holes and offering some exquisitely vivid detail.
Although the story still flowed, however, I did feel that the descriptive lost a little of its edge when the group became split.
To explain… the event descriptive, location work and scene-building are all there – and all very, very good – but it seems almost like the split causes the author to put his foot down a little, in a hurry to re-establish the group and push the story on.

Even so, this remains an excellent example.

Language & Grammar – 4.0/5.0 (Very Good)
To be honest, this really felt as though the author fell into what I call “fini-fever”… The line approaches, the concentration splits, little errors happen.
Throughout this I found far more instances of missing and slightly incorrect words, along with a fair number of punctuation issues.
Basically, this needs a quick proof-read just to sharpen those rough edges… especially as they are more noticeable toward the end of the book.

That said, the word selection and usage remains at a very high standard. Perhaps the editor just needs a little shock-therapy to bump him/her back on track.

Plot – 5.0/5.0 (Outstanding) – VERY MINOR SPOILERS
I really liked this. Far more considered and very well executed.

The rescue and the platform assault are brilliantly conflicted where the central characters clash over methods, and this makes the ending all the more complete.
Perhaps Platt throws in a few too many hints at who is doing what, but at the same time, he makes it impossible to tell precisely which way things will turn.

The end is beautifully open for a number of possible stories to grow from this seed… and the best bit? It doesn’t feel unfinished.

General – 4.5/5.0 (Excellent)
You know what I’m going to say… The cover? Typically sci-fi and feels a little off-target from the content.
Nevertheless, it is very good and will draw in the sci-fi bods in their droves…

To that end, I truly hope it is successful.

Platt really has hit the trilogy nail on the head; Part One, build the story and create the characters. Part Two, drag the story screaming and kicking to where you need it and leave the characters in the deepest doo-doo you can manage. Part Three, all bets are off! Make a bloody great mess and decide who comes out smiling.

As a trilogy. Excellent.
As a concluding part to a trilogy. Brilliant.

Bittersweet Endings

Man, I love this series! Rath, Paisen, Beauceron, and Dasi go through hell but keep pushing. Betrayal, adventure, action; this series runs the gamut! Sorry to see the story end... It's bittersweet, knowing this (part of the?) series is wrapped. I can see spin-offs!
