A - Growing up, I loved books like Ender's Game and the Tom Clancy Jack Ryan series. When I sat down to write the Janus Group books, I wanted to capture what I liked best about those books - sci fi thrillers or action thrillers in a fast-paced style. The series is best characterized as cyberpunk science fiction thrillers, with a little detective and police procedural elements thrown in to boot. Finally, I like my characters to be relatable, and facing overwhelming odds - the plot is action-packed, and keeps you guessing. Beware: plot twists ahead!
Q - What order should I read the books in?�
A - Last Pursuit is a short story set in the Janus Group world - it's the prequel, and the story that inspired me to write a full series. You can read that first (for free), then Books 1-3 (Rath's Deception, Rath's Gambit, and Rath's Reckoning) in order from there. Books 1-3 are a complete story arc - Book 3 resolves everything from Books 1 and 2.

A great read!

*Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Also this is the third book in a series and NOT a standalone. You should have read the first two books before continuing on or you will be lost. There will be spoilers for the first two books ahead*
Rath's Reckoning is the third and final chapter of the Janus Group Trilogy and man was it fun! Just as great as the first two books in the series. The author did such a great job wrapping up this story. I was reading along just like how in the world is this going to work out? How are they going to be able to take down the Janus group? It just didn't seem possible, but then it was perfection. It came out of left field for me, but I loved every minute of it. Really I finished reading the book and turned to my husband just like "Oh man! You are never going to believe what happened! This book was so amazing!!" Fun times.
The end of the last book was quite the cliffhanger. Rath had just found Paisen in the jail planet she was on only to find the company had followed him to find them both. We were left with them being tied up in some company facility with employees ready to torture them for the foreseeable future. It really looked bleak for them, though Rath did have the cop, Beauceron, who would be looking for him.
This story starts right off with Beauceron trying to find Rath and saving him from his dire fate. You know throughout the whole series we have followed Beauceron and how he feels responsible for some cops deaths and him trying to find the Janus Group and hold them responsible for their crimes. I must say at times he got on my nerves in this book. I know he is a cop, but his blind optimism that they could somehow just walk up to the bad guys and put them on trial, that when things go bad they should turn themselves into the police even though that would mean losing whatever lead they had on the bad guys, his being so tunnel vision about it was frustrating. It was one of those yes, this might technically not be what you should do, but it is for the greater good. Do you want these people to pay for what they did or do you want them to kill you before you have a chance? After everything he has seen to almost underestimate the company was a bit surprising. He was just really rigid, but at the same time I get it. It is just not the way I would think in the situation.
Rath and Paisen were so much fun. They are finally working together to try and take away the threat for good (and get paid). Man at the beginning of the story you can just see Paisen getting annoyed with Rath and thinking you've got to be kidding me!? Why do I have to be stuck with this idiot?? Oh I loved it. That is one of the things I love about the story. Rath is not some super amazing does everything perfect kind of person. He is more real, more like what a normal person would be like in his situation. It is good that he has Paisen on his side because together they might have a chance.
There was a lot of action in this last chapter of the story which was great. With contractor 700 on their trail as well as the rest of the Janus Group they have a lot working against them. They get in some pretty sticky situations and somehow have to figure out a ways to not get killed. I loved all the technology in the story. I loved Rath's attachment to his backpack forge that he has been carrying around forever. I just loved this story. Like I said above I was getting towards the end of the story just thinking this is never going to work out, they are never going to be successful, but then it was just perfect how everything played out.
I really enjoyed this series and cannot say enough good things about it. I don't read a lot of sci fi, but I probably should. If they are anything like these books I will love them. So much fun, so much action and adventure, such evil bad guys, just such a great read.

Book Review: Rath’s Reckoning

Note: I was gifted an advance copy of this work for an honest read and review. The following review, as with all reviews, is my personal opinion of the submitted text.
Writing Style – 4.5/5.0 (Excellent)
As the closing part of this trilogy, this certainly felt stronger than its predecessors.
The structure was consistently good and the temporal line of the plot completely settled.
With the sub-plots quickly diminishing, the central plot became the sole focus for the story, and this reaped massive rewards as the characters gained stature and pulled the reader into the book.
Character Development – 4.0/5.0 (Very Good)
Dasi’s character seems to pull a little of the limelight away from the others for a large part of this offering, but this is not detrimental to the story at all and serves to draw the reader further into the story, as the plot winds up to an almost inevitable conclusion.
Rath and Paisen feel more rounded and more real, but I felt Beauceron was a little static as a central character in this episode.
Nevertheless, the secondary cast were excellent (occasionally a little wooden in their dialogue, but nicely drawn) and altogether, it made the story much richer.
Descriptive – 4.5/5.0 (Excellent)
I really thought I was onto a 5-out-of-5 here, as the descriptive does hit a much higher level, leaving far fewer holes and offering some exquisitely vivid detail.
Although the story still flowed, however, I did feel that the descriptive lost a little of its edge when the group became split.
To explain… the event descriptive, location work and scene-building are all there – and all very, very good – but it seems almost like the split causes the author to put his foot down a little, in a hurry to re-establish the group and push the story on.
Even so, this remains an excellent example.
Language & Grammar – 4.0/5.0 (Very Good)
To be honest, this really felt as though the author fell into what I call “fini-fever”… The line approaches, the concentration splits, little errors happen.
Throughout this I found far more instances of missing and slightly incorrect words, along with a fair number of punctuation issues.
Basically, this needs a quick proof-read just to sharpen those rough edges… especially as they are more noticeable toward the end of the book.
That said, the word selection and usage remains at a very high standard. Perhaps the editor just needs a little shock-therapy to bump him/her back on track.
Plot – 5.0/5.0 (Outstanding) – VERY MINOR SPOILERS
I really liked this. Far more considered and very well executed.
The rescue and the platform assault are brilliantly conflicted where the central characters clash over methods, and this makes the ending all the more complete.
Perhaps Platt throws in a few too many hints at who is doing what, but at the same time, he makes it impossible to tell precisely which way things will turn.
The end is beautifully open for a number of possible stories to grow from this seed… and the best bit? It doesn’t feel unfinished.
General – 4.5/5.0 (Excellent)
You know what I’m going to say… The cover? Typically sci-fi and feels a little off-target from the content.
Nevertheless, it is very good and will draw in the sci-fi bods in their droves…
To that end, I truly hope it is successful.
Platt really has hit the trilogy nail on the head; Part One, build the story and create the characters. Part Two, drag the story screaming and kicking to where you need it and leave the characters in the deepest doo-doo you can manage. Part Three, all bets are off! Make a bloody great mess and decide who comes out smiling.
As a trilogy. Excellent.
As a concluding part to a trilogy. Brilliant.

Bittersweet Endings

Man, I love this series! Rath, Paisen, Beauceron, and Dasi go through hell but keep pushing. Betrayal, adventure, action; this series runs the gamut! Sorry to see the story end... It's bittersweet, knowing this (part of the?) series is wrapped. I can see spin-offs!
