Toxic advice!

Just bought the book and seems to contain allot of useful information. One thing I did note in the animal section is the part about alternative treats for dogs on page 55. The book advises to feed seedless grapes as a low calorie snack. This is dangerous information in that grapes are toxic to dogs and can cause renal (kidney) failure. It does not happen in all cases and the mechanism of action for the kidney failure is not known at this time. Being a veterinarian and dealing with theses cases in the past, it can be not only a life threatening condition, but also a very expensive one. I have informed the publisher, but it should be public knowledge as well.

Wow, who knew!

This book is rather large with small print, so it's definitely PACKED with information. I read somewhere (on some prepper site) that it was a good book to buy. I'd love to be a prepper, but let's face it guys, that's expensive! With this I figure I can be a 'mini-prepper' because I'll only have to have food enough for a hard fall/winter season, and then this book comes in handy after that.
There is SO much knowledge in here! I really thought it would be some anecdotal stuff with some handy things thrown in with cute phrases, but seriously! This is like a homesteading manual! It has sections on animals, including wild, domesticated, and livestock; cooking, general, breads, dairy, meats, preserving (includes canning, pickling, distilling); crafts for home, fpm nature, for gifts and decorations; gardening, general, flowers, vegetables, fruits, herbs, and specialty, also landscaping; health for beauty, home remedies, including recipes and elixirs; home DIY's for inside and outside; hardiness zone maps for gardening, pest-proofing, and even buying land in the country. Each major section of the book has darkened side panels, so one can easily navigate the plethora of information. Also, there are lots of illustrations to help those of us who are more visual in our learning abilities.
I bought mine from Amazon. Their packaging was terrible! I ordered 2 and both arrived torn on the edges (yes, this is a paperback). However, it was so good and comprehensive, I ordered the survival book in this series (Survival Wisdom and Know-How), and I'll probably order others in the future. I seriously think it's worth it.

Good information.. although directed towards more modern "country" and doesn't contain all the pamphlets..

Good book. Lots of great information, and fun ideas.. except that I was disappointed when I got it, as I though that ALL of the Storey's Pamphlets.. and it didn't. Also, it is directed towards more modern 'country'.. requiring most products and materials to be purchased from hobby stores and such, and doesn't really empasize the country aspect to me. Although it does have wonderful information, and really neat projects, I would have liked to see more..
Another thing.. if you have bad eyes, or wrists I would suggest getting a good pair of reading glasses and/or a magnifying glass along with this book, and for those with Carpal Tunnel or Arthritis.. Definately break out the wrist braces for holding this HUGE book upright while reading. I've found that by sitting in the recliner and propping the book up against my thighs or on a pillow, it eases the strain of holding such a large book.
Aside from all this, I would definately reccomend buying this book, and also, I bought this normally $20 book, for only $4 used through Amazon, and was VERY pleased with the condition.. If it had more information I would probably be willing to pay more..
