About the Author

Marvin Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level for more than thirty-eight years. Since 1968, he has been employed at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, and is now professor emeritus of mathematics education. Professor Bittinger has authored over 190 publications on topics ranging from basic mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to applied calculus. He received his BA in mathematics from Manchester College and his PhD in mathematics education from Purdue University. Special honors include Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and his election to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. Professor Bittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at many mathematics conventions, most recently giving a lecture entitled "Baseball and Mathematics." His hobbies include hiking in Utah, baseball, golf, and bowling. In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana, with his wife Elaine. He has two grown and married sons, Lowell and Chris, and four granddaughters.

Judy Beecher has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Indiana University and a graduate degree in mathematics from Purdue University. She has taught at both the high school and college levels with many years of developmental math and precalculus teaching experience at Indiana University—Purdue University Indianapolis. In addition to her career in textbook publishing, she spends time traveling, enjoying her grandchildren, and promoting charity projects for a children's camp.

Barbara Johnson has a BS in mathematics from Bob Jones University and a MS in math from Clemson University. She has taught high school and college math for 30 years, and enjoys the challenge of helping each student grow in appreciation for and understanding of mathematics. As a Purdue Master Gardener, she also enjoys helping others learn gardening skills. Believing that the best teacher is always learning, she recently earned a black belt in karate.

Mary DeSouza Stephens graduated from MIT with a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. She has over 15 years of teaching experience, including designing courses and teaching as an adjunct faculty member at UMASS Boston; TAing discrete math at MIT; and developing curriculum for and teaching classes in high school computer science, LSAT, algebra, geometry, science, humanities, and K-12 math and computers. Outside of teaching, Mary worked in engineering, product management, and strategy for companies including Edusoft and Oracle. This book is Amaze-balls!!!

If I could give it more than 5 stars...I would. The first time I took the Math section I failed. Having not had a single math course since about 2003 I was super rusty. I purchased this book in hopes of 'refreshing' my memory. Some of the lessons I didn't remember learning at all but the book was so thorough in explaining the problem and steps to solving it. I went in to still nervous because I hate taking test but I was more confident than my first attempt. Needless to say, I passed!!!! I should have my score on March 6th and if I remember to do so I'll update with my score difference.

Update: my score went up 38 points!!

What an amazing tool, it helped me tremendously! Great examples, practice problems, and practice test. I worked through the entire book and do not know how I would have passed the math portion of the exam without it. If you struggle with math or just need a refresher on the concepts this book is a must have!

Worth the Money, A lot More Helpful than Most Books.

So I took the TAP exam and passed every subject minus the math. I have checked out study guides from the library and even purchased the online study and practice tests from Longsdale Publishing. Most books are the same. They teach you the concepts and then give you a practice test in the back along with the right answers on another page. The problem with that is, whenever I get an answer wrong, I have no idea why. And have no one to go to for help. This author however breaks each and every problem down along with the right answer. I feel like I can move along in my studying without always feeling "stuck". I test in a month and am so glad I purchased this study guide.

About the Author
Robert D. Gatewood received his Ph.D. in industrial psychology from Purdue University. After accomplishing this, he first worked as a consultant for American Institutes for Research and then joined academia. His first position was as a member of the Department of Management at the Terry College of Business, University of Georgia. As has been indicative of his well planned career, Bob thought that he would stay at Terry for maybe five years because it would only take a few years for a smart person with three liberal arts degrees to get used to business schools and then move on to bigger and better things. Thirty-four years later, he decided that maybe it was time to move on. During these years, Bob climbed the academic ranks from assistant to full professor and pursued an administrative career at Terry as a department chair and associate dean in the College of Business. Bob was also elected to five executive positions, including President, within the Human Resources Division of the Academy of Management. In 2005, Bob moved to the Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University as the Director of the Executive MBA Program. In 2008 he moved to Denver, Colorado when his wife Chris became Dean of the Daniels School of Business at the University of Denver. He had the good sense to retire from faculty life at that point. As a consultant, Bob has worked with a number of companies; PPG Industries, Westinghouse, BellSouth, and Ford for example.

Hubert S. Feild earned his Ph.D. in industrial psychology from the University of Georgia. He has been a faculty member in the Department of Management at Auburn University for more than 33 years and is now the Torchmark Professor of Management. His numerous articles have been published in such journals as ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY, and PERSONNEL PSYCHOLOGY. He also has done many projects for companies like SONY, PPG Industries, GE, and AmSouth Bank. A former student athlete, he played baseball at Mississippi State.

The bible of selection! A must have!

Gatewood and Feild have definitely written the authoritative volume on selecting employees. They cover everything: legal issues, measurement, selection decision making strategies, job analysis, and the whole gamut of selection devices: application forms, biodata, interviews, ability tests, personality tests, assessment centers, integrity testing, and so on and so forth. And they cover these topics IN DEPTH -- not just a brief overview. The countless examples are very helpful. And the authors display a great dry humor -- the author bios and dedications are priceless (also be sure and check out the graphologist's interpretation of Gatewood's personality, and his responses)! I definitely recommend this book as a text for graduate and undergraduate classes, and also for the HR person who needs to beef up their selection know-how. A great reference source full of the latest selection research -- a must have for every practitioner's and student's collection.

Not sure what to call it...

The book is filled with interesting applications of R and data mining; however, I am unsure where to place it in my library. Each chapter is a brief summary of the process taken to solve a question with data, which is peppered with R syntax and figures. Given that each chapter is a case study, I found many decisions to be given in one-liner explanations. Thankfully, most of the contributing authors provide references for further exploration.

What I found to be the most limiting factor from enjoying the material was the preparation of the text and supplemental materials. For example, chapter 8 syntax does not include syntax on how to import the CSV file nor how to use some packages/functions as detailed in the chapter. Granted it may be assumed the reader should know this ahead of time, I feel for the sake of consistency that such information should still be provided. Consequently, the syntax feels more like a sketchbook rather than a step-by-step process on following the author towards a solution. For those reading this review, you can visit the following link and compare chapter 8 code and dataset - some familiarity with R may be needed to identify the discrepancy: [...]

I was hoping this book would be a great addition to my library and for others, but I cannot justify recommending this book as of now. I hope the authors of the book revisit the supplemental material and text to ensure consistency in the reading.

Not worth it !!!

I was expecting a great deal since it has real life applications with R source code for trying out the different algorithms. But I was deeply disappointed with the typesetting of the document - R commands are mixed up with their outputs, there is no consistency of the R code & output formatting, across the different chapters and worse, the source code in the accompanying web site for some of the chapters are either incomplete (for example Ch.13, fortify.R is missing) or existing files are not syntactically correct (Chapter 8). I have been spending the last few days on running the source code to reproduce the results given in the book but I have succeeded in running 2 chapters.

I am not sure how reputed publishers such as AP can compromise on quality & do a lousy job and the publisher would have been better of by suggesting the authors of the various chapters to use the R-package knitr and that would have brought out the formatting consistency automatically and avoided authors pasting source code into the text document processor & making avoidable mistakes !!!

Content-wise also, not all the applications are interesting. Chapters 6, 11, 12, 14 - all of them use random forest to analyse the data-sets. Not all the chapters are interesting for the reader who is specialising in specific domain. At least they could have chosen the case-studies & the data sets in a way that a wider set of algorithms are covered.

case-studies are very good for novices of data mining, but editing is poor.

The contents(case-studies) are very good for people who are not so experienced in data mining field. I had hoped I could learn advanced data mining via step-by-step case analysis. But many R codes of the book cannot run and some dataset referenced in the R code cannot be found in the data set download. I hope the author revisit the supplemental material and R code to make them connsistent and provide updates via rdatamining.com.

Timothy Noah was recently named "TRB," the lead columnist at The New Republic. He wrote for Slate for a dozen years, and previously served at the Wall Street Journal, the New Republic, and the Washington Monthly. He edited two collections of the writings of his late wife, Marjorie Williams, including the New York Times bestseller The Woman at the Washington Zoo. Noah received the 2011 Hillman Prize, the highest award for public service magazine journalism, for the series in Slate that forms the basis of The Great Divergence.

A nicely paced examination of economic inequality's origins and future in America.

I think this book provides a good precursor to 2014's "Capital" by Pikkety (same academic rigor, but with less technocratic financial speak). It passionately supports action to change current trends by providing useful and easily understood historic and current economic data. An enjoyable, if disturbing, portrait of a looming economic crisis.

**Worth while read** but quite dense with numbers and facts at times

Good book with lots of supporting information. Can be quite a bit like reading an economics treatise at sometimes. The last chapter about solutions is not as well developed as the rest of the book. However, overall a good read for understanding the underlying basics of income distribution over the past 70 years.

it Doesn't Look Good

This is an excellent book explaining clearly why the United States will be a second rate power, perhaps like Russia, with our only strength that of the military which will be used to block and coerce other nations. We are no longer for our own people. ThE remedies that Mr. Noah suggests are good ones but so unlikely to happen that we are really looking at the doom that we have created.
